Previous generations faced with difficult circumstances & hard times knew one thing - nobody likes a complainer or an individual who's decided learned helplessness & depending on others is the way to go. Granted, previous generations may have been too loathe to talk about negative experiences & the feelings those generated & there was a high price paid by many in the form of untreated addiction, (typically alcohol), violence in the home & other social ills.
But is today's tendency to let it all hang out & to embrace with pride, dysfunctional labels & diagnoses - self or proper, any better? Finding out & sharing with those nearest to you a properly arrived at diagnosis of say... Social Anxiety Disorder is supposed to be the beginning of a path to better coping skills & mental health, not a flat out renunciation of most or all adult activities & responsibilities.
Everybody goes through rough patches. Most are perfectly capable of getting through them, of "faking it until they make it" until things get better again or even if they don't ever improve much. After all, why constantly trauma dump on those around you who can't escape your orbit for good & valid reasons?
Everyone is entitled to a degree of empathy when faced with genuine troubles but they're not entitled to suck those around them dry or get a permanent free ride. Our societies are proving to be generous to a fault - literally, with too many of these people who expect life to hand them everything they need simply because in the past of r present, some heaping piles of steaming shit fell into their lives. If they got out of their own heads, they'd see we all deal with shit & most don't expect more than the occasional hand to haul us over a steep & short incline.
