If I wanna get back into MWO for a few matches here or there of big stompy robots (my ass ain't grinding f2p games) is the new Annihilation bundle of mechs worth?

It's got a suite of mechs I like (Marauder and Catapult my favorite two) and the rest are fine.

However if the loadouts are totally fucked I'll just do another playthrough of MW5 Clans.

If you like the Marauder and Catapult, you should try the Timber Wolf!!!

As I have noted before, while vehicles have their weaknesses, they are relatively cheap compared to Mechs and you simply cannot ignore them.
I find vehicles excel more in specialised roles than mechs do. Weapons boating, truly high speed skirmishers and being a cheap slab of armour are all roles I prefer to use vehicles for than mechs.

Like a Saldin on an open field. If you're lucky you can slag a few AC 20 rounds in the Mechs and then retreat without getting hit. Or that one upgraded Partisan tank which is equipped with 4 RAC 5 (Ithink those were the 5 versions) Imagine the volume of fire they can spit out without any care for overheating

Wait I know that name? Isn't that from the cartoon?
Yup! The battletech cartoon from the nineties has been retconned as wartime propaganda for children, created by the Tharkad Broadcasting company to explain why they were suddenly such good friends with the people they'd been throwing hands with for the last three centuries.

Yup. Adam Steiner was indeed the protagonist of the 90's cartoon. While the show has been retconned into being in universe propaganda for the FedCom, elements of the show's story did become canon.

If they find a way to sneak in Nikolai Malthus, I'll laugh my ass off. Low hanging fruit, but it'll be funny.

But it doesn't change the fact that if that Hetzer rolls up to you, it's going to get at least one shot off.
The Hetzer physically hurts me to look at.

How the fuck do you aim the thing?

A tracked vehicle with a hull-mounted main armament can pivot in place with neutral steering, and thus aim the gun along the horizontal axis without having to change position.

The Hetzer would actually need to move forward or backwards, and probably do a bunch more maneuvering since the target is unlikely to stay still, which would make actually aiming the gun almost impossible.

And yes, autism.

Those guns aren't fixed in place. They have limited traverse and elevation.

Or rather, at least the old Hetzer art had a gun that could clearly move, copied as it was from the IRL Hetzer. The new one from RG: ilClan? Yeah, nuh-uh.

You're not going to enjoy WWII tank destroyers. Pretty much all combatants had them, but the US was the only nation that gave many of their TDs turrets.

The original BT Hetzer is just a callback to German WWII turretless tank destroyer designs like the Jagdpanther and the lighter Jagdpanzer 38 (AKA the Hetzer, or 'chaser' in German).

As Snekposter points out, they had a few degrees of gun movement that allowed them to fine tune their aim, but were mostly expected to line up their big guns along with the vehicle itself.

They were effective, but were essentially mobile artillery pieces, and didn't move or fight like the tanks they were designed to hunt. They really weren't used the way the BT Hetzer is in the game.

Yeah, but that's really only for fine-tuning the aim in the terminal phase.

You'll note that all those examples, including the WW2 Hetzer, have tracks, while the Battletech Hetzer has wheels.

Now, why does that matter? Because, as I said in my original post, a tracked vehicle can rotate in place by engaging one track forward and the other in reverse. This is known as neutral steering.

Here's a good example of this in action:

Unless I'm missing something from the lore, the Hetzer does not possess this ability, so the only way it can rotate the gun towards a target is to actually drive the whole vehicle forward or in reverse to turn. One can already see why this is going to be a problem when aiming, let alone if the vehicle is in a hull down position, or in a confined space.

I genuinely have no clue how you'd actually use something like the Hetzer. Tank destroyers with the gun mounted in the hull are ambush predators, they rely on concealment to fire the first round. The Hetzer will have a lot of difficulty staying hidden if it needs to move to adjust the gun every time the target moves.
