Basil Poledouris - The greatest film composer ever

So, was Basil Poledouris the greatest composer of film scores ever to exist, or merely of the last 100 years.

He was unique. A lot of his scores brought a very different feel than the John Williams and the like.

I currently have Conan in 96KHz FLAC blasting out my era-appropriate boombox via the aux cable.

He was good but he was one of those composers who would take his old stuff, change 3 notes and present it as a completely new composition.
For example, if you listen to the score from Starship Troopers, you will find that some of those tracks are rip offs from the Robocop score.
You might excuse that but I think that if you're getting paid a ton of money for your work, you should avoid these sort of hack jobs, especially if you have the skills to avoid it.

Amazing taste, boys. One of my absolute favs, I'm also a big fan of the Robocop and Conan movies. Well, just the first ones.

I cannot refute the statement of our Op about Basil being the greatest, cause Poledouris is too dear to me, but Alfred Schnittke is a close second. His work in Klimov's Agoniya gave us one of the most exceptional soundtracks of all time, high quality earporn:

While Conan the Barbarian is clearly the great film score of all time, I don't think anything else he's done, or at least what I've heard is anywhere near the same league. Conan works because there's memorable theme after memorable theme. The other scores I've heard from him tend to just have a few great ones each. Even Conan the Destroyer doesn't stand up to it.

A bit critical there, but I do own a bunch of his works on CD. If you want the one most similar to Conan, check out the forgotten Flesh & Blood soundtrack.

I think Robocop is almost as good, as is Hunt for Red October.

He also composed the music to the one positively memorable part of the 1996 Olympic Games opening ceremony. The part where there is a shadow theater imitating ancient Greek statues and paintings performing sporting feats.
It made a huge impression in my mind when I was a kid. I wish I could find it somewhere...
