Mets dumping Mendoza might give them a slight boost because he was a horrific manager and they needed the change, but the bigger issue is that awful GM of theirs. Practically unlimited money to work with, Stearns put together a terrible team with the second highest payroll in all of MLB that's 13 games under .500 at the end of June with almost nothing of value to trade away and a weak farm system to build from.

Should've fired Mendoza after they got swept at Dodgers stadium. Should've fired Mendoza at the end of last season.

The Mets don't have a TEAM, we got a bunch of guys wearing uniforms. Nothing fits together, nobody plays together, there's no plan. How exactly are we supposed to WIN? Pitching? we suck. Hitting? We can barely get 2 runs a game, so what exactly is our win condition here? Right, nothing.

Nevermind this franchise is completely allergic to Japanese talent. They tried Kodai Senga, it didn't work, and they raged quit the country ever since. No one is gonna convince they even look at Japanese talent anymore.

Stearns is a BUM, and why they were so desperate to bring him here is beyond me, he has no credentials. "Well you know, the Brewers were kinda good" SO? What has he won, oh NOTHING? Great. Now we're gonna waste a whole other season, bringing in a new manager, ending up firing Stearns anyway.

Wake me up when its 2028, we fucking suck

Jazz Chisholm got told not to eat lollipops on the field. Man, this guy is a grade-A idiot. All the whining, all the moronic plays, challenging balls that aren't even close...remember when we got told he was just a fun-loving guy for doing choreographed dances on solo HRs?

Funny how the bat-flippers who "just want to play" all turn out to be cancerous.

He's a nigger, acting like your garden variety nigger.

In the best of timelines, this nigger would be hanging from a tree instead of infesting my TV screen.

Is this my best day ever? Two bums who wrecked my teams both got fired on the same day. HUZZAH

Unfortunately, it's 3 years too late. Perry should've been fired the second he failed to either resign Ohtani or trade him for a haul. Instead he went for the middle path: get nothing but sell a few more season tickets, I guess. BRILLIANT!

Please just drag Trout's corpse to the world series so he can just snag a ring like Kershaw just did. PLEASE GOD

It seems they can find the IL together.

I just assumed he was brought in to swipe some bags finally.

Mets fans thought the only thing holding them back from being a consistently competitive franchise was not having an owner who was willing to invest serious money into the roster. They weren't wrong, but there is about a two dozen other factors that go into having a roster that can compete. Talent alone is not enough, and that is even if what you are buying is actually talent to begin with.
Damn I didnt realize the White Sox scored 22 runs on the Royals yesterday.
I am more shocked that the score was 22-1 yesterday but 2-1 today.

Can somehow tell me how the Royals went from almost winning back-to-back World Series a decade ago but immediately fell back into irrelevancy. It is like in only a blink of an eye they fell completely apart.

The answer I'd give you ten years ago:

Small-market teams have to go balls-to-the-wall and sell out their future when the opportunity for a World Series comes around. Hence, the front office opened their wallets for crucial rentals like Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist.

The answer I'm giving you today:
  1. As a result of those titles, the front office spends all of its salaries on washed-up franchise guys like Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez, to the detriment of developing a competitive team;
  2. John Sherman is an avaricious Jew who cares more about bulldozing the most beautiful ballpark in America and replacing it with Consoom Product Park, than he does about building a team worth watching.
ETA: this video does a good job of explaining it.

TLDW they used small-ball to cheese the game. Be hard to strike out, steal bases, manufacture runs, have a strong bullpen, and punish your opponent's mistakes. Some would argue they were a Moneyball success story.

I think that the biggest (not the only) reason is that they're a small budget team who has not drafted well or developed well since then. If you look at their drafts from 2015 to 2022 (I cut it off there since that's realistically where you'd see someone make a sustained impact in the Majors by now) they've drafted poorly and not developed their picks. They've especially done this with their first round picks (of course with the exception of Bobby Witt Jr.)

2015: They draft two 1st round pitchers, Ashe Russell and Nolan Watson; the latter made it to AAA as a Padre in 2024, the former pitched 42.1 professional innings, never getting out of Rookie Ball in 2021. The highlight was second rounder Josh Staumont who had a few really good years as a reliever, but that's it.

2016: Did not have a first round pick. Their second rounder, A.J. Puckett briefly made it to AAA as a Mariner in 2023. The best player they got was Nicky Lopez, a glove-first middle infielder whose been hit by more pitches in over 700 games than he has home runs.

2017: Nick Pratto in the first round, MJ Melendez in the second. Those are the players of note.

2018: This is one of their better years. With four 1st round picks they get Brady Singer, Jackson Kowar, Daniel Lynch, and Kris Bubic. The first and last are decent starters; the former as a passable #4 rotation piece and the latter as a good #2/3 with injury issues. Lynch is kind of like a lesser Staumont at this point for his career, and Kowar's a bust at this point. They got Kyle Isbel in the third round, but he's basically a good 4th outfielder.

2019: Bobby Witt Jr., is undoubtedly an exception to this whole list. Outside of him they did do well to grab Vinnie Pasquantino in the eleventh round, but Matt Olson he is not.

2020: They deserve a bit of a pass as it was a draft with so many unknowns due to the shortened Covid season. Still, Asa Lacy was taken fourth overall, and was a huge bust affected by injury and attending the Daniel Bard School of Free Passes.

2021: The seventh overall pick, Frank Mozzicato, is in AA and another attendee of Bard's school. The two second rounders look like they may both be able to eventually nibble around the edges of an MLB roster for a bit. Carter Jensen looks to be a good pick from the third round, and Noah Cameron was taken in the seventh and looks like an okay back of the rotation piece.

2022: So far only third and eleventh round picks Mason Barnett and David Sandlin have made the Majors, neither with the Royals and neither with much impact.

The Royals didn't really have any superstars back then, but they had depth everywhere and were one of the pioneers of the modern trend of having a small stack of about three dominant relievers to close down games when they had Greg Holland, Wade Davis, and Kelvin Herrera.

Now they don't have as much depth in large part reflected by the draft/development history, and with @Meat Target mentioning Moneyball, I think they're not succeeding at one of the big parts of what makes Moneyball workable.

Jomboy did a shout-out for some tranny's video on his recent Yankee's pitch clock video and said that "she" did a great job:
