I’ve never seen the film, but I’ve heard it’s godawful, which is such a shame, because the books should translate really well into films. George Macdonald Fraser even wrote the screenplay - what the fuck went wrong?

Of course, but movies won't have Lovecraft's insanely long description of things. So we're never going to hear "savage orgies of the Negroes brought from distant African shores". With the visual medium, there's a lot more you can do to make things more interesting and open to interpretation. For several of the most offensive moments in his stories, you could replace them with a multi-ethnic cult and nothing would change. And if a good progressive director could adapt his stories with respect while giving a more modern bent, I'd be all for it. Hell, there's several interesting stories that are kind of respectful of foreign cultures (for the time) that they could adapt, like The Nameless City.
The book Royal Flash contains a wonderful account of Flashman effectively raping his "wife" who happens to be a princess because he's standing in for the prince and he appears to be entirely unaware that female consent is a thing. "I picked her up, popped her on then cavorted around the room bouncing her up and down and singing 'This is the way the farmer rides'." It's hilarious and awful all at once. This is technically supposed to be her wedding night.
First, they cast Malcolm McDowell as Flashman. He's a good actor, but way too small to play flashman, and isn't really given any good direction. The actress playing Lola Montez is Spanish, and Rudi von Starnberg is English. They also significantly changed the plot and added a bunch more campy bs scenes, and last of all, which may be just a personal annoyance, they changed a lot of Flashys internal monologues/narration into things he would say to other characters.
I know Conan the Barbarian isn't particularly faithful to the source material, but it's a pretty good movie in it's own right. It also has the greatest ost ever made.
I concur it’s a Really fun movie and yes the music is epic but think of the wasted potential

I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but I'm going in assuming it's not as good an adaptation as Die Farbe was.
It's not a good "straight" adaptation, but I hold that it manages to capture the feel of Lovecraft very well.
That was the MacCauley Culkin/Seth Green scene kid movie, right? I remember seeing it on cable, but can't even remember if I liked it or not, which is a sign in and of itself, I guess. It was based on a good book, though?
