Crest of the Stars is actually pretty damn interesting, OP confirmed for shit taste. You can tell the writer spent a fuckton of time on the setting (come on, he made his own conlang and got a bunch of VAs to speak it) and it was nothing but a product of love. I'm amazed it got so many episodes worth of content and it's too bad you don't see distinctive anime like that these days.

That's an important scene for establishing the backstory of the Abh race (space elves/basically Romulans) as well as why Lafiel acts the way she does throughout the show.

Overall it's a flawed but still good series. My biggest problem with Crest/Banner of the Stars is that there's a tendency toward long dialogues that don't really advance the plot or tell you much about the characters. Well, that, and there's barely anyone from the enemy faction ever shows up. I'm sure it worked better in the book than animated (although I've never read the novels so I don't know how faithful it is to them). Banner of the Stars II is probably the best because it has a cool take on a "prison planet" story with a great cast of villains (which the other seasons were lacking in). All of Crest/Banner of the Stars is like the Legend of Galactic Heroes Gaiden arcs (the prequel stories showing Reinhard's rise to power), just snapshots of a galaxy at war and the intrigue that's always going on. The space battles in Crest/Banner of the Stars rule too, I love the rules the setting has with them and goddamn are they pretty and impressive as hell.

There you go OP, there's my defense.

Could've fooled me it had all that effort put into it, but like I said, it was so boring, I had to watch it dubbed, so I doubt any of that language thing transferred to what was a very standard English dub.

The fact is, something can have all the effort in the world put into it, but if it's not interesting, that effort is for naught. I found it to be utterly uninteresting. It takes more than production value to win me over.

Agree or not, I don't care what you think of my tastes in stories. Tastes aren't made or broken on a single title.

But with how obscure I figured it was, I'm amazed I got an answer at all. So thanks.

Something of a fun fact but for a long time all sci-fi was considered "bad" like it was even lower than horror to work on sci-fi movies when everyone wanted to be in dramas western or war films. Sci-fi had the lowest budgets, the most bare bones of plots and and Cheapest effects out of any genre for many years.

I think it wasn't until works like planet of the apes or 2001 a space oddessy did sci-fi really gain mainstream attention and be seen as more than just cheesy Saturday mattine kids fare.

hot take but the gods themselves by Asimov was kinda shit except for part 2. part 1 was ok though.

Orson Scott Card (the Enders game guy) is a writer I both love and hate. his enderverse characters all have a super high IQ so card can write for 10 pages about whatever topic he wants. its cool though because the stuff he writes about is interesting or failing that funny like when he wrote an entire book about the democrats starting a civil war because they were brainwashed by cultural marxists in college or something

I tried watching Crest of the Stars and I got bored too. And I'm someone who enjoyed the first Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA. I wanted to watch Crest because I'd heard the creator put a lot of time and effort into the setting, but the whole thing gave me a "Creator getting high sniffing his own farts" vibe. It's clear he loved the Abh far more than I did.
