Awful "Epic gamer" PC cases

IMO mesh isn't the problem, for me, it's the gay disco RGB lights everyone wants to add to video cards, fans, and everything else. I sleep in the same room with my desk, and I don't always shut down my machine, so I have this night light in my room. So a solid side panel is a must (I had to put electric tape on some parts of my video card). I have the (plain black) fans maxed out on all the vents on my fractal case though.

Personally, I was never a fan of closed off PC cases. Ones with either a solid steel wall, plastic, or glass for a front panel. I've always been more of an airflow guy myself. The fact that mesh fronted cases are becoming a trend is probably one the best thing to come recently.

For those of you that don't care for tempered glass or RGB, and are cool with a full tower, I'd recommend the Enthoo Pro 2 with the solid side panel. I'm not sure if the P600S has the solid panel option, but if you're one of those psychos that prefer to suffocate your hardware, the P600S does include solid sound dampening front and top panels you can just place over the fabric mesh front and top. Though I'll gladly take the fabric mesh myself.
Mesh is coming back, thank god. It used to be the standard, but then GAYMER cases went full retard and started putting tempered glass literally everywhere they could. I have an 8 year old steel case that has mesh filters for all of the intakes and it makes cleaning a breeze. The best part is my case actually stays cool because it can get airflow instead of fighting for it around tempered glass covers. The only downside is that it is A) heavy as fuck, and B) has a plexiglass side cover. But at least I can buy another back panel and remove the plexiglass one because the panels on both sides are universal with each other.

I occasionally think about other cases, but I always see the same problems: chinesium screws, weak and thin supports that bend when you're trying to screw something in or remove the weak chinesium screws, a lack of drive bays, and tempered glass. The fucking tempered glass. I just don't want it near my PC after all of the times I've seen it spontaneously explode on the internet. They genuinely don't make cases like they used to.

I'm sick and tired of PC cases on Newegg advertising that they have a tempered glass window, and when I get the fucker, it's plexiglass. Isn't that against the law or something? Tired of returning these cocksuckers.

Way back when, I built a PC case that was literally just a plywood cube, with a plexi side panel attached with magnets.. Spraypainted black, and RGB puke inside. 2x120mm intake, 2x120mm out, with basic metal fan grills, a random switch for power on, and a black PVC pipe to support the GPU. It was hideous, but it kept temps so low.

Now I have a Meshify 2. Decent enough water cooling support.

Might look into something bigger to add more rads to soon.

Cases with two tempered glass side panels are fucking aids. I'm talking shit like Lian Li's Lancool II lineup, the Fractal Design Torrent line of cases, and others. Whoever thought that the cable side of the case needed a tempered glass window needs to be fired from a cannon into the sun. Godbear help you if you have cables that bulge out, and press against the glass.

The worst part is, aside from the retarded dual glass panel, the Lancool II Mesh, and the Torrent are great airflow-oriented cases. And I know the former has beauty panels to hide/press the cables, before putting on the glass panel, but fucking hell, a metal panel would've been easier, and lighter weight.

you can just order another side panel that's metal though right?

As far as I know, for those cases, you can't order metal side panels. Though I do see that Fractal offers a "solid" variant of the Torrent, thank fuck. And I'm looking on their site, and they don't seem to even offer spare/replacement Torrent panels. And I looked at Lian Li, and from what I see, they don't offer solid/metal panels for their Lancool II line.

Huh, I could've sworn they offered mesh panels for their o11 EVO case, looking the site it's only for the front, not the side, and you're spot on with the Lancool 2, idk what I was on when I thought I saw them offering solid panels.

Fractal has offered the choice of solid metal panels for a long time, IIRC. I have one of the old beasts with sound dampening panels. Shame they trap heat and make the fans spin at top rpm. Had the option of glass panel, or solid panel with a fan cutout aimed right at the GPU.

Edit; apparently it's still in production. Define R5. Great for a low power mini server. Two 5.25" cages, 8 HDD/SSD sleds. 2 SSD sleds on back of mobo tray. You just dont see that kind of storage support anymore, really. Mounting SSD's to power supply covers looks like a pain in the ass for cable management.

Somehow between the late 90s and 2022 the knowledge of fan vents just got completely lost. Just stir that air in the case and hope it goes all the right ways, I guess.

I had a custom case made for an old computer out of acrylic glass. It's a massive dust draw that loves to suck fingerprints right off your fingertips from across the room and also easily scratches if you look at it the wrong way. (and that was the "scratch resistant" acrylic option I picked, while it's true that "resistant" doesn't mean "proof" it's just ridiculous and also completely random what will cause these tiny ugly scratches. Accidentally bang a metal connector against it = no scratch. Wipe some dust with the wrong type of cloth = you better believe it. I don't wanna know what the regular one is like) It's one of these things that possibly maybe sounds like a good idea, but in practice just doesn't belong on a computer case.

I have to say that I slightly (slightly!) softened my stance on RGB lighting. I saw examples of it done well in a understated way. It just rarely is. There's a difference just like there is between some tastefully applied subtle make-up and slathering on the ol' warpaint. The line is razor-thin and fluid like the gender of many of the more extreme aficionados.

the best computers to make sleeper builds in
They are a bitch and a half to disassemble (or put in anything that wasn't a part of its original configuration, like a new power supply). Unless you're going with a Thin Mini-ITX motherboard you're gonna have a bad time trying to build a modern PC in this case.

That's also the reason I skip cases with a solid front, without even a single 5.25'' bay. Even if you don't have any peripherals to put there you can always replace them with a cooling fan and a mesh, significantly improving the airflow.
