IMO the best option is to buy a old school case with a 5.25” and 3.5” bays, and get yourself some of these types of gadgets:
Modern I/O combined with the tasteful and sturdy design of an older case.

My own case is a Corsair, black. Not flashy at all. But very spacious, with a lot of fans. I was more focused on what went inside it. For a first-ever first custom build, I went pretty nuts. Over $1,500, the case accounted for $60.00 of that-I ordered all the components on Black Friday in 2017 and made a real killing on deals.

I don't know if they even need to go that far, I just wish case makers would standardized the front panel ports so routes like this aren't needed for people who dont want optical bays. Fractal makes a front panel port upgrade for the case of theirs I have but it requires changing the entire front panel, and they dont seem to have any available as a separate part. So basically I would have to change out the entire case, something I am now going to put off until I build a new machine in 5 years.

Hate all the gaudy RGB shit. I can't justify spending more than $100 on a case. Even then, the only reason I needed more than $60 was because I needed to accommodate 2x 360mm rads and pump/res and the Define S2 suited my needs. Only LEDs I have is a lighting strip set to white to illuminate the white coolant color. Hopefully the ugly case and RGB craze will run its course and revert back to minimalism in the future.

There's a major problem with sleeper cases that I've found from repurposing a mid 2000s compaq case for newer hardware, and it's thermals. Prebuilt cases for cheap old computers were not designed to dissipate any more heat than they needed to, and that's typically a double digit number of watts. I drilled extra vent holes in it to add more fans but it's still not enough and the only way I can run it without thermal throttling is to remove the side panel. This isn't even a particularly power hungry computer and it draws less than 400W at full load. Your options for 90s cases that can dissipate 500+ watts effectively are very limited and you're not going to get it to work with some eMachines case even with a bunch of speed holes added to it.
For a bit of comparison. a Voodoo5 6000, which was a top of the line beast in its day, draws 60W at full load, while a GTX1050 draws 75. The idea of a GPU alone drawing 300 or more watts was unfathomable at the time, and cases were not made to accommodate that kind of heat. I can at least appreciate that most of these awful gamer boxes are more functional than old cases in that regard, because even a poorly designed one doesn't have the glaring heat issues that old boxes do.

I was considering it. I had to do the little half pencil stand on the corner of my GPU to put my mind at rest that it wasn’t bending something with how big it is. If the trend continues pc’s are going to have to become horizontal

its inevitable they'll keep getting bigger.

I want to build a "sleeper PC" if GPU prices ever go down again. Get an old 1990s case and put screaming new parts in it.

I haven't gone too deep in yet but there are apparently ways to modify the case to improve airflow. People do this regularly and it seems to turn out fine

Just seeing that computer makes me happy. I never even own one that looked like that, but I saw those kinds in the office where my dad used to work. That convex CD drive, that, that grew my heart three times just now.

Make some discrete speed holes in the case.
Buy a PCI-E riser cable and you can do whatever you want, buy it long enough and the card can hang outside the window.
They're not that expensive, that one is a Thermaltake for $35 bucks so it's a branded product and not some fly-by-night Chinese bullshit. Well, it's probably not that.
There are also cases that utilizes them to mount the GPU standing up. Spoilered for size of the gif(2MB)
If you're handy you can create your own solution. For a long time I've had a pipedream of building some kind of slim twin tower case computer in the style of the X68000. Snake the riser through the base, have the GPU standing up in the second tower.

sounds like a pretty good idea.
i suspect that one day a bunch of newbie pc gamers are gonna have destroyed hardware because of how massive they're getting.

Personally, I was never a fan of closed off PC cases. Ones with either a solid steel wall, plastic, or glass for a front panel. I've always been more of an airflow guy myself. The fact that mesh fronted cases are becoming a trend is probably one the best thing to come recently.
For those of you that don't care for tempered glass or RGB, and are cool with a full tower, I'd recommend the Enthoo Pro 2 with the solid side panel. I'm not sure if the P600S has the solid panel option, but if you're one of those psychos that prefer to suffocate your hardware, the P600S does include solid sound dampening front and top panels you can just place over the fabric mesh front and top. Though I'll gladly take the fabric mesh myself.
EDIT: Yeah, the P600S does have a solid side panel for 10 bucks less than the tempered glass ones.
