EU Austrian train plays Hitler speech over loudspeaker - "In Austria, the technical problem is Hitler."

Travellers on an intercity train in Austria were startled on Sunday when a recording of an Adolf Hitler speech was played on board.

Instead of the normal announcements, a crowd could also be heard shouting "Heil Hitler" and "Sieg Heil" over the train's speaker system.

The operator said there had been several such incidents in recent days.

One passenger on the Bregenz-Vienna service told the BBC that everyone on the train was "completely shocked".

David Stoegmueller, a Green Party MP, said the speech by the Nazi German leader was played over the intercom shortly before the train, an OEBB Railjet 661, arrived in Vienna.

"We heard two episodes," he said. "First there was 30 seconds of a Hitler speech, and then I heard 'Sieg Heil'."

Mr Stoegmueller said the train staff were unable to stop the recording and were unable to make their own announcements. "One crew member was really upset," he added.

In a statement sent to the BBC, Austrian Railways (OEBB) said: "We clearly distance ourselves from the content.

"We can currently assume that the announcements were made by people directly on the train via intercoms. We have reported the matter to the police," the OEBB said.

It is understood that complaints have been filed against two people.

Mr Stoegmueller said he had received an email from a man who was on the train with an old lady who was a concentration camp survivor. "She was crying," he said.

He said another passenger remarked that when other countries had technical problems, it involved the air conditioning breaking down.

"In Austria, the technical problem is Hitler."

Hitler was born in Austria, but emigrated to Germany in 1913 as a young man.

The amount of Holocaust survivors has tripled since I was a wee lad. What's the current rubric for survivor status?
At least by the US Holocaust Museum's standards:
"The Museum honors any persons as survivors, Jewish or non-Jewish, who were displaced, persecuted, or discriminated against due to the racial, religious, ethnic, social, and political policies of the Nazis and their collaborators between 1933 and 1945. In addition to former inmates of concentration camps, ghettos, and prisons, this definition includes, among others, people who lived as refugees or people who lived in hiding."

And Franco is on the caboose, checking at the rear if everything is ok.
Franco didn't make the trains run on time. Quite the opposite, I think, so late was the training carrying the Caudillo to Hendaye that Hitler became even less receptive to Franco's extravagant demands, a meeting Hitler likened to painful dentistry. Part of the delay was the result of differing rail gauges, but that wouldn't account for all the delay.

Austrians should have more appreciation for their famous national. They were certainly keen on Anschluss.

Y'know for how awful those camps supposedly were, there sure are a lot of survivors hanging around still more than eighty years later. I guess the death coaster and masturbation machines couldn't get them all. Pretty hearty bunch of people, there.

And if they ever do 'run out' they'll just start going on about intergenerational trauma and heritable PTSD, they've already begun laying the ground work for that. Maybe they'll be able to find some hundred year old granny who brought Hitler a cup of coffee once in 1939 to drag to Israel for a trial.

remember seeing years ago a "society of holocaust survivor ancestors" or some other grifting shit, it's gonna get milked for all it's worth.

We have an update to that story:

Hitler announcement: suspects confessed

Two suspects investigated after the recording of a Hitler speech over the intercom in an ÖBB-Railjet have confessed. They are an adult and a youth, both from Vienna.

Online since today, 3.17 p.m.

The duo had been questioned by the Lower Austria State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counterterrorism (LVT), Johann Baumschlager of the regional police headquarters in St. Pölten said Wednesday. The Austrian nationals will be reported to the Vienna public prosecutor's office under the Prohibition Act. No details were given on their motive.

Baumschlager emphasized the rapid investigation of the suspects and in this context the good cooperation with ÖBB. The disturbing announcements had been played on Sunday in an ÖBB-Railjet, which was on its way from Bregenz to Vienna.

Video analysis uncovered suspects
Instead of the usual announcements, a Hitler speech with "Heil Hitler" and several "Sieg Heil" shouts resounded through the train. In addition, there were minutes of erroneous and meaningless information. ÖBB investigated the suspects after the incident in the St. Pölten and Vienna section of the route by means of video analysis and filed charges. The LVT Lower Austria then started investigations under the Prohibition Act.

In total, there are said to be three cases in which loudspeakers were "hijacked" on trains. The incident on Sunday was the first under the Prohibition Act to be brought to the attention of the LVT Lower Austria.

ÖBB turned to IKG
ÖBB CEO Andreas Matthä addressed the president of the Jewish Community of Vienna (IKG), Oskar Deutsch, in a letter on Tuesday. "I am personally deeply shocked by this incident and have immediately arranged for internal investigations to be launched," the ÖBB manager wrote. "Anti-Semitism and hatred have no place at ÖBB - neither on the train nor anywhere else," he assured. The two suspects had already attracted attention for trespassing on railroad facilities or trains and wearing ÖBB uniforms.

this is nuts, you could read it wide enough with "anyone ... displaced" to include every damn GI mobilized from the USA for the war lol
Right, even Einstein could be considered a Holocaust survivor by this standard.

I do think it's a good thing they reference the non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust/Nazi racial policies, it's not like the Nazis had any less hatred for the Slavs they murdered.
