They think so too, I would not be surprised if the fence is actually to keep Germans away. Lets just say Germans in Austria are like Mexicans in the US.
They dont like us, but no one cares. In typical German fashion, we are still spending a considerable time there for vacation, just to provoke them. Many Germans study or work in Austria, and they hate it.

Not really, we share the language (though they have a funny dialect), but that is pretty much it.
Austria was once a powerhouse in Europe (Austria-Hungary, until 1918) and also they were a big part of the Holy-Roman-Empire (the Hapsburger).
