At what age is it appropriate to discover porn?

Damn it, my comment got shoah'd.

What I wrote earlier is that not being exposed to sex and death on the regular was a relatively rare privilege until the last century, where most children did not have their own room, and the whole subject being a taboo probably probably doesn't help in reducing their fascination with it.

If we're talking internet porn then it's probably better release mechanism than the children trying to do it with their classmates (at the best case scenario).

There's a chasmic difference between how sex actually is like and how pornography portrays it. There's a good reason as to why most people have no problem with parents talking to their teenage kids about what sex is but do have a problem when their "sex ed teacher" does it.

It's a very touchy and intimate subject which shouldn't be out in the open, and plenty of kids who watch too much porn then go and replicate the acts that they see in there with their classmates, like that one story about how an australian teenage girl ended up having rectal problems because her bf tried to replicate the acts that he saw in porn

Yeah, so the good, upstanding people shut up about it and let the porn directors take the mic.
Same as with gun laws, it doesn't stop the criminal elements from getting them, just the people who abide the law.

That's not a consequence of watching "too much porn", it's a consequence of not knowing anything besides porn. And probably degenerate porn at that.

I like you style, your first paragraph is on spot but this is retarded: "Internet Porn"? So, the worst Porn there is? I honestly think that most stuff, which is already considered "normal", is anything but normal and degrading to women. People who need that as and outlet, even as kids, should actually be openly questioned about that habit and that doesn't happen because nobody talks openly about sex. Again, that's why porn works on kids because they don't even know what is ok anymore because NOTHING seems to be ok from their perspective. Porn is in the open, nobody does anything about it and the high road would of course be to just openly discuss sex as any everyday routine. Kids can't know what is degen is if everything pertaining sex, even normal sex, is presented to them as a hushed, taboo topic.
Again, it's not porn on it's own, it's very much a question of what acts exactly we should even tolerate, as a society in general. When people condemn porn, they never say what exactly they saw and what exactly the DON'T want their kids involved in.

Of course, but the risks of actual sex is bigger than having the wrong idea about sex. It's easier to rectify wrong ideas than it is to rectify a 15 year old pregnancy.

You can't say that influence of pornography is worse than having actual sex when the example you use is of actual sex. You're no longer comparing the two to each other at that point.

This is a very interesting thought. You may be right.
There's no way addictive, degenerate pornography can be healthier than engaging in natural behaviors with one's own peers (which would be rare if society promoted virtue over vice anyway, plus gender segregated schools), between those two options it's obvious which is worse.

What'd be ideal is teaching abstinence, but people have an irrational aversion to it, baselessly claiming it's ineffective.

Calling it natural is a naturalistic fallacy. Even though a girl might get pregnant during puberty, it can be life threatening for her, not to mention the heavy impact it could have on her and her family's life. Getting some weird degenerate ideas about sex is a milder effect. Also, you're calling engaging with peers healthy, but there's no assurance that the ideas taken from that are healthy at all. More than one teenager has caved to pressure to something they weren't ready for and more than one has told lies in order to get what they want.

It may not be the all out crazy ideas that one gets from pornography, but they do give a more direct negative effect if they are damaging, and typically less reversible too.

the age at which it's appropriate for boys to try and access porn is the same as the age at which it's appropriate for girls to try and access social media. adjust your numbers accordingly

i'd say 16-ish

i could be convinced to up it to 18 though

You don't need pornography, you need Jesus Christ.

Except it's not necessarily an either/or situation to begin with (and even if it was it'd probably still be better to stay away from porn). There's a possibility they'll be interested in trying the things they see, and it's worth noting they definitely ain't just seeing a man and a woman in missionary.

It's only healthy in comparison to pornography, I made it clear abstinence is wiser, I'm not advocating for it. After all, sex outside of marriage is immoral and disordered behavior in itself, just less so. Peer pressure doesn't seem to make them doing something they already shouldn't be doing much worse.

You're really underestimating the damage of addiction. You could even become gay and/or trans. You're not going to convince me that is better, I'm just letting you know right now.

Yes and if one never saw porn there's no ensuring that the partner they try sex with hasn't. But when you compare the two and imagine which is more damaging you can remove the edge cases and only deal with the separated parts.

You're not going to convince me
Judging from previous posts I've read of yours, this is always the case in every instance. So I wasn't going for that anyways. I was just steelmanning the position.

I discovered it at 10 and have a healthy relationship with it as an adult. I never got "addicted" to it and have always consumed it in moderation.

I was too young for it, but the people here who are "addicted" to it lack self control and would have had the same issues had they discovered it at 20 or even later.

I'm not sure what would constitute edge cases here, nor am I sure we should ignore them. I'm very against abortion but even I have to acknowledge some outliers and account for them.

Not every instance, but when it involves kids being exposed to LGBT shit I'm basically zero tolerance, unless it's portrayed in media or education which depicts it negatively.

There's no age at which the male brain is properly developed to have intense visual sexual stimulus available with zero effort. It really is like asking what's the best age to first try heroin, so the correct answer is never. I'm not one to use Kiwifarms as a tell-all website, but we'll just say I didn't have access to high-speed internet until college, so I was barely exposed to porn at all until I was 18, and there's still nothing good that came of that.

Lots of good discussion here.

Only thing I'll add is if one is to abstain from porn while single, they need to seriously consider the difficulty and powerful temptations. A real plan is needed on how to deal with those feelings, some sort of outlet or other way of dealing with stress or getting your 'dopamine' in a healthy way.

There's a reason people go back to it even if they know it's unhealthy. It's easy to say no at your best, but you need a plan for when you're at your weakest. Like any addiction, having an accountability partner is very beneficial.

Pornography has great potential to destroy someone completely in the same way that drugs, gambling and alcohol does. It creates a false dopamine that tempts people into indulging in things like this. So the ideal answer is most likely never due to the addicting nature of it. Even when you're doing it in moderation. It's still incredibly risky.

Pornography was one of many things slowing down my language learning process amongst other developments by the way.
