I've never been able to astral project, but my dad used to be able to and didn't know what it was (at the time I didn't know there was a word for it either, until I had my "woo-woo" phase years later).
We were having one of my special late-night-can't-sleep existential anxiety conversations when he told me something along the lines of, "This probably sounds stupid," (he's a very science-based person) "But when I was a kid I used to be able to like, leave my body before I went to sleep if I focused hard enough. But I always got freaked out and snapped out of it because... well, I was worried about what would happen if I couldn't get back into my body."
That's my only relevant experience with it; I've tried to do it myself but been unable to.
