Speaking as an American, what's the deal with these guys? This is one of those things that never really made it to the USA. We here know them mainly from their newspaper comic strip, but they seem to be some kind of big deal among Euros and European comic afficionados, what with their many comic books and cartoons and films and video games.

I only trust you guys to inform me which things are based and which are pozzed, cringe, controlled by the Jews etc, so where does a beginner begin with Asterix? Please redpill. Are these newer movies coming out any good, or are the old comics best, or what?

Are these newer movies coming out any good
Didn't know there are new movies still coming out lol.

I love the old comics and movies. The acted ones with Depardieux should be good. From the animated ones I only really remember 12 tasks and america, although I'm sure there must have been more (I think something with vikings?). Damn, I need to rewatch them all when I get the time.

I'm following the thread, I'm interested in knowing whether the new ones can fill their shoes. With today's political climate I really doubt it, a lot of the ethnic caricatures and cultural exaggerations probably wouldn't fly today.

where does a beginner begin with Asterix?
I think "Asterix in Britain" from 1986 should be good for an American.

I would avoid the live-action movies, they are crap. Stick to the bandes dessinées and the animated cartoons (I have not watched the recent ones because I don't like Alain Chabat and his group of comedians).

Asterix is great or at least the old stuff is. As for it being Jewish, I think Jews have been trying to claim it for a while but IIRC there's never a story where Jews show up or Jewish chicanery takes place. No idea about the ethnicity of the authors.
Accurate depiction of niggers tho.

I used to read them a lot when i was a kid. The stories are self contained thus you can pick up any without knowledge of previous ones. As for Jews i have heard that newer content does have pozzed elements as i haven’t read any for a long time as such cannot say which do/don't however you should be fine with anything pre 2000. When it comes to movies 12 task is probably the best one.

I would avoid any of the newer stuff (post 2000 maybe is a good cut off, some games from this era should be fine I think). All I know is that the old ones were peak Western animation together with Lucky Luke.

> Obelix! There is a nigger on board!
> *sinks the ship

Quick edit: Holy shit, they are making Asterix: The Kingdom of Nubia, the kikes are now niggerfying it.

The first twenty four volumes are the series' best, as René Goscinny, the series' writer, died during the production of book 24 (Asterix in Belgium). Albert Uderzo, the series' artist, took over the writing after that, but it wasn't as good.

If you want to check out the comics, here ya go:

There have been some games over the years, the first 2 XXL games are good if you like beat-em ups, though they do get a bit repetitive. The soundtrack is pretty good though.

Jews show up when asterix and obelix visit the middle east to procure oil for the magic potion, they end up hitching a ride with joseph of nazareth. Also, the original author was a polish jew. I've read all the comics by both Goscinny and Uderzo writen upto 35, I haven't read the new ones by the other authors so I can't vouch for them.

Asterix and Obelix vs Ceasar is literal kino and not in an ironic way either. I would 100% recommend watching it. Mission Cleopatra is alright but not as good and for the rest of the movies your mileage may vary, but the first live action one is a must see.

With "Bandes-Dessinées" it's best to stick to the certified hood classics and avoid the modern zogged bullshit. The BD industry pretty much collapsed once frogland got inundated with Manga in the 90s.

The Gaulois are pretty based with their "fuck off my lawn Roman'niggers" stance.

Stick to the old comics, the translators did a great job finding comparable jokes.
There's also two lines of solo play Adventure gamebooks set in the Asterix world , that play like the old Fighting Fantasy books

Uderzo's writing have detoriated quite notably as the series progressed, culminating in a a comic where an alien looking like a cheap Mickey Mouse knockoff appeared. Still for a time, it remained decent enough after Goscinny's passing.
they are just terrence hill and bud spencer for kids.

the only memorable thing i have is the permit a38 as a jab towards bureaucracy.

The Twelve Tasks of Asterix is a timeless classic, the bureaucracy scene was so great that Permit A38 even became part of common vocabulary in Germany, Poland and few other european countries.

Not a Euro but I grew up with Asterix and eurostuff like I did with American stuff. The way I can describe it to a Yank is its like the EU's version of Popeye. Those old feature length Popeye cartoons with Ali Baba and stuff, just imagine those shenanigans in Central Europe during the Roman Empire and you have a good idea of what its like. The comics are very good imo although I read them when I was a kid so idk, I didnt really enjoy the Popeye comics but Asterix is colorful, has visual gags, recurring in jokes and social satire among other things. There are aspects which you could call pozzed like the race positivity towards native americans and blacks ("theyre just like us goys", Asterix and his village are visigoths in what is current day france), unlike its contemporaries like Tintin. The movies are mid imo, theyre very straight adaptations and I think they lacked funding so the VAs a bit off, pacings sometimes off etc.

I always thought hill and spencer was asterix and popeye for adults. All of these properties were inspired by Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and Three stooges, which is why they feel similar. I dont recall Hill and Spencer movies being that adult, aside from occasional small jokes about sex, drinking and gambling. I especially remember the animal movie, forgot what its called, directed by Italo Zingarelli, being so much like a combination of tintin and asterix.

Finally, a thread on my favourite animé

As somebody else mentioned here before, the stories are self-contained, and can start at any book. Hell, even Panoramix's potion is inconsistent throughout the series (First story says the effect lasts several hours, in the live-action "vs. Caesar" one is about 10 minutes as said by Crismus Bonus, or lasts seconds in video games).
Uderzo's writing have detoriated quite notably as the series progressed, culminating in a a comic where an alien looking like a cheap Mickey Mouse knockoff appeared.
Ah, the Falling Sky. I have a lot of things to say about it, but half-way would have liked it if it's just Uderzo dunking on anime (I think the Dragon Ball Z looking alien was supposed have a name based off the Beyblade author) and its rising popularity and domination over Franco-belgian comics in the region. But I couldn't take it seriously because apparently the mouse and capeshit were the good guys.

I have the entirety of the classic Asterix animation collection in my drive from the first animated movie in 1967 (Asterix the Gaul) up to the 2006 Vikings one, where one of the English va for the viking guy was John DiMaggio. Those animated movies are worth watching. Maybe Mansions of the Gods and Secret of the Magic Potion if you can tolerate movie original deuteragonists.

I said this in the Western animation thread once, but Contre Cesar is one of the best liveaction adaptation this franchise has. There's also vs. Cleopatra one but not as great imo.

There's the Netflix miniseries that I couldn't finish because I'm reminded that Netflix touched it. But for the Asterix enthusiast in the thread, was that adaptation actually worth watching?

As for games, this one is a timeless gem:
