Definitely. Your cells acquire microscopic damage during regular daily living activities. Her body is in triage mode, and "repairing cellular damage" is so far down on that list that her cells probably look like the equivalent of a house built in 1900 with zero upkeep. Still standing in the technical definition, but full of holes, nonfunctional, and can't be repaired without extreme intervention (if it can be repaired at all).

Alternatively, they may look like a junker car that appears to run on hopes and prayers. You jam your foot on the throttle and it goes about 10 mph top speed.

Healthy functional tissue has been replaced with nonfunctional (low metabolic activity) fibrosis. Some of that there's no coming back from.
