So a few days ago this dropped
Needless to say no one is happy about this. Right now the video as 49,000 likes to 12,0000 negative, but the comments are universally negative. As you can expect Disney took the Percy Jackson/The Dark is Rising route with the adaption process with the addition of some PC Stuff:

Julius Root is now a woman played by Dame Judi Dench of all people.
Butler who is supposed to be a giant Eurasian man is now played by a British-Nigerian
Foaly the Centaur is now Indian instead of Irish

I should also point out that Josh Gad is going to be playing Mulch Diggums. This is kind of sad as had the film been made earlier they could've used the better Robin Williams or Jim Carey to play the part.

I will say though I am not at all surprised that this looks as bad as it does. Out of the Big Three kids books Artemis Fowl was the one that was never going to get the same treatment the other books series of my generation got. I suppose it's a small mercy that it's coming out now when I'm old enough to realize that only two of the eight books are any good.
 
If this came out like 15 years ago when I liked those books it would've redpilled me into a /pol/ack. Butler's a black guy? Root is fucking Judy Dench? The hell?
 
It's amazing how much Hollywood will throw at the wall on the strength of a single hit franchise.

Now I'm just waiting for HBO or Netflix to try and adapt Berserk to cash in on the "dark fantasy" niche Game of Thrones captured.
 
SO Butler is black now? SO that means that a black family has served a white upper class british family for generations?

Call me crazy, but i think in their efforts to diversify, they seem to have opened up a whole new can of worms in that particular instance.

Oh, and of course make the tech support guy an indian, because they're so good at that.
 
Fun fact: I actually thought Butler was black for years because of the cover of Eternity Code, where his face is in total shadow. I only learned what 'Eurasian' meant a few years ago, and had assumed it was some place in the Middle East.
 
I think everypony should be aware that Artemis Fowl the book series was......preachy. Like really fucking preachy. Like "MUHENVIRONMENT! MUHHUMANS ARE EBIL!" sermons in every fucking chapter.

Infact in the first book the character played by judi dench had a big speech as to how the protagonist fairy was "the first wammen fairy police detective" and thus blablabla sexism blablabla she has to be super good at her job.....except now instead of a generic Clint Eastwood pastiche he is now being played by judi dench which is...kinda odd.

Honestly this suggests to me that they might actually be cutting some of the in-book preaching from the movie unless they are going to use this casting to double down with it (i.e. have the attempted coup in the second book not be because of boring fairy politics but because the villain doesnt want a wammen to be in charge of the cops or some shit) but frankly unless this shit is memeably bad we can be assured that nobody here will ever watch it to find out

I don't remember them being that bad when I was a kid. I thought the environmentalist references and the humans bad thing was in character for the fairies (and that's where almost all of it comes from IIRC). And women police being told to do extra good at their jobs is an IRL thing too.
 
I really like the book series when I was a kid, as I'd finished the actual Formorion and Ulster Saga's, so actually had a good understanding of the different allusions to the Dagdan culture that was referenced early on in the books. They have been working on this film for a while now, and now that I am past the point of caring about the series, I wrapped it up with the original trilogy, I can see we are going to be in for a treat with this film.

So this will likely be a big steaming pile of shit. I can just see it now, I bet you the Troll that the Butler fights if they keep it in the story will be a big huge white troll, just so the writers can get their subversive little messages across.

Colfer is definitely an environmentalist, it really shows in the last book. But in earlier books, it was all fairly tame and as you said, in-character.
 
15 years ago my siblings read this, and I saw a lot of people reading it on the train. I thought it sounded cool, but from skimming it I thought it would be better as a movie - it seemed like an exciting story in a simple prose style, so I decided to wait. Finally.
 
That kid playing Artemis doesn't look smug or cocky enough to be Artemis. He looks like someone who gets swirlies every day at school, not like someone you'd ever genuinely respect.

I never read past the fourth book when I was younger, probably because I wasn't so young anymore and had lost interest by that point (and I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on that when I could buy other things). The first three were classic YA though and I read them a fuckton.

It was the one that seemed to imply Artemis and Holly liked each other.

I don't know, it felt like I was reading someone's fanfic instead of a kid's book.

That one is book 6 and it is one of the worst books in the series. The thing you have to remember with Artemis Fowl is that everything after Opal Deception (which is the 4th book) is shit. Colfer shouldve ended the book at Opal Deception because it was the perfect ending for the series. Sadly his desired to rip off movies and promote environmentalism was too strong
