Those nibs have a very limited ink capacity (most of them anyway. I've seen a few with a tiny holder for extra ink). You have to dip it again when it dries or after a certain point if you've figured out the timing. That's why it's called a dip pen, cause you gotta dip it and dip it again to keep writing / drawing with it. Did you not realize that?
Curious, why do you think cleaning is a pain in the ass? Me, I just had a little cup of water nearby to dip the nib in, and some tissue paper to wipe the nib dry. Worked fairly well. Those things are really cheap so it's not like you need to be super careful with them.
