the eastern part is the dominican republic, which is the spic country
they hate each others guts ever since haiti conquered and briefly annexed the dominican side of the island, but the dominicans reestablished independence again after some 20 years of occupation.
nowadays haiti is notable mostly for being the biggest poverty shithole in the americas, and dominicans still hate them because haitian illegal immigrants are a blight upon their country

also there are illegal logging operations where haitians cross the border and chop down a bunch of tree on dominican territory, they do this because they have almost completely deforested the haitian side of the island, so now they can't get wood anymore except by literally stealing it from the DR, and they need lots of wood because they burn a ton of charcoal
