Apartment Red Flags

1) Being on the ground floor means that cockroaches could be a problem and also weirdos looking into your windows.

2) Big windows offer poor insulation and if they face the sun in the morning or evening it can get very annoying and very hot.

3) landlords in my area always overstate the apartment size. It wouldn't hurt to measure and double check. If they lied on the ad, use it to negotiate rent down.

My current apartment is at ground level and while we never had an insect infestation of any kind, we have had two, possibly three instances of mice in our unit, which I got blamed for because I thought doing deep cleans every day was a waste of time, money and energy when I'm out of the house for up to 15 hours a day.

Brazilians are some of the most insufferable assholes ever when it comes to cleaning. Covid just made it worse. Don't room with anyone who grew up in a Brazilian family unless you already have OCD and are retarded enough to think you can kill 100% of outside germs.
 
Biggest red flag will be the local SES/demographics. If there's a dense minority population, specifically blacks and hispanics, and/or if its in a run down impoverished neighborhood, avoid.
Also avoid apartments near to public transportation spots or light rail trains because they tend to transport undesirables from crime riddled areas to less-crime-riddled areas.
 
basically any apartment my broke ass can afford is probably a red flag that it's shit but whatcha gonna do
 
3 things I've had to learn to check when looking at rentals, since landlords are pure fucking scum.

1. Are the outlets grounded. Yes I'm not joking, check before you sign your lease.
2. Is their good water pressure and does the hot water come on. I've seen places that have one tiny tank for a building worth of people and places where it takes up to 5 minutes before the hot comes through.
3. Bugs of any kind. Check baseboards, cracks near floors not a good sign. Anything from bedbugs to cockroaches to ants. It's all miserable.

I also make a habit of looking at windows to see what state they are in, it's bad if the weather stripping is shot. I also check any areas that would be above eye level. Top of cupboards, higher spaces in closets. If it's not clean chances are they are the type of owner to cut corners.
 
Try to make sure a washer and dryer are included. Having to take turns at a common one, or go to a laundromat, is a pain in the ass.

You jest, but the smell of curry will permeate into the very walls. At that point, just bulldoze the unit and rebuild it.

That is a Fair Housing law violation if I've ever heard one.
 
If the apartment is underground, you will get spiders. Big fuckers, regardless of you never opening a window.

Living in general with strangers. I hated that, because even if they were older than me. They always left a mess after themselves, and getting pissed off when you ask them to clean up.
Not OCD about it, as you need bacterias to be healthy and like. If it doesn't look dirty, it isn't dirty. I'm more about that everything must be organised and has it's place, and no crumbles at the floor.
 
If they are doing renovations or read they're doing them. I had both units beside me worked on around Christmas time. They usely get loud Mexicans to do it. Glad I'm getting the hell out in a few months.

Open the drawers in the kitchen and bathroom, if you see cockroaches, run!

This can be two sided. I've dated a girl who was moved into a renovated 1 bed for like $1k. It was like walking on cardboard. You could hear a tip-toe from me weighing 195. Walls were paper thin. Just expensive for no reason essentially.
Then I found my own spot to move where the actual landlord was in the place working/renovating the house himself. He's my current landlord and he is so good, my dad even loves him and he only met him for 5 mins.

This is wrong. Dont follow this, Specifically in Florida. White people can literally never mind their own business. White people are insanely trashy. Separate yourself if you'd like to, but until I see the ratio of trashy to non-trashy white neighbors tilt towards the non-trashy. Im sticking to it.
