It had nothing to do with Tekkaman Blade. It was watching Raideen and seeing just how much better it is than most other anime in terms of almost everything -- individual episodes, ongoing story, worldbuilding, voice/sound work, showing rather than telling, pacing, character design, art direction, and so forth. Even J-Decker (which is still good on the basis of designs alone) looks like a poorly-made joke with its excessive monologuing, narration, and exposition now. Why does anime do that?

There is still good Western media today, and anime has fallen victim to all the same things people get mad at Western media for such as highly-referential fanfic-like writing (Gundam Unicorn), trying too hard to make evil villains look good (Gundam Unicorn and Yamato 2202), and pushing stupid, poorly-thought-out writing meant to seem smart, gritty, and worldly (G-Witch and Grendizer U). I gravitate towards anime because I like the focus on cool vehicle designs, but you'd have to be out of your mind to deny that stuff like Clone Wars and MOTU 2021 blows most anime out of the water in terms of style and story.

I've been watching a lot more anime in recent years and there's no doubt much of it is trash for many reasons. Bad art, bad music, bad acting, bad writing, degeneracy, stupidity, unoriginality, etc. But guess what, there's always something to watch if you wade through the trash. That's not the case with western shows anymore. The last one I cared about became a dumpster fire, The Walking Dead (first season is legit 10/10).

Agreed. I don't pretend I fully understand the Japanese. But at least they make things that are fun. No winging about gays or transsexuals. Mostly. Even then there's enough variety that you can find something for you.

It gives a Man Hunter, of all things, a heroic moment for God knows what reason, and it constantly makes excuses for Zeon while making the Federation corrupt from the start, controlled by a literal shadow cabal, only because Zeon can be interpreted as Imperial Japan. It's neat that it got some MSVs animated, but story-wise it's incredibly lacklustre and should be viewed in the same light as IDW Transformers or Nutrek.

The 70s one. I've always heard that it was one of the blandest, safest 70s mecha shows, but it's not. Jinguji is sooo cool, the battles in the first half are intense and fresh, the constant upgrades are great, the cartoony antics and animals are actually funny, and the second half has better monsters and a great backstory. The Mari ecchi crap is annoying, but I skipped those scenes and the character designs were good and desexualized otherwise.
