Late on this but I saw it when scrolling through to catch up:
I started watching Black Clover and I hate it but I cant stop.
* Episode long fight scenes with lots of talking
* Characters in love but denying it for 50 episodes
* Poor animation
* Characters seem retarded
* Plot you can see happening a mile away
That being said the series has gotten a lot of genuine laughs from me, mostly because of Yami. They do acknowledge that the cast is mostly made up of brainless infants. I switched to the dub because Astas voice actor gave me a headache and it hasnt been the worst. It hasnt been the worst thing to put on in the background but it seems like there have been a ton of episodes where nothing has happened.
Black Clover is a series that really grows on you once you get past the initial roughness. It starts out feeling like a generic shonen, but eventually you realize...well, it's a generic shonen, but it's a good one. There's nothing truly groundbreaking about it, but sometimes that's all you need. Asta is a relentless force of good that refuses to give up no matter what, and he ends up inspiring everyone around him to do better too, even a lot of the villains of the series. You can't help but like him after a while because he's just so pure of heart; ironic for someone who's pretty much got a devil inside him. It even gives him a plausible excuse for being clueless to how every girl seems to want his dick; he's of such single-minded determination to marry Sister Lily that he's oblivious to all others' advances.
It's mostly held up by its cast, and like I've mentioned before, I honestly can't think of a single character I actually hate thus far, and that's pretty damn rare, especially for a long-running shonen. Even archetypes that I generally dislike (Yuno being the edgy 2kool4skool rival, for example) are written so that I enjoy them (no matter how much he teases Asta, the two of them are still best bros). There's a great sense of humor throughout, but it knows when to take itself just seriously enough, and I enjoy where the story's gone. It also manages to legitimately subvert expectations of standard shonen tropes a few times along the way.
And yeah, the dub is considerably easier to listen to. Asta's Japanese voice is just really grating, especially whenever he screams (so, all the time). Apparently Funi put the dub on hold for a while, so it hasn't been on Toonami in a few months; hopefully they pick it up again soon.
I'd say it's one of the better shonen series to come out in recent years, and it's a shame that a lot of people wrote it off as just a Naruto clone when it was first coming out. A friend of mine talked about how he chose to begin reading MHA instead of BC after Naruto wrapped up, and he said that in retrospect, he wished he had chosen the latter. I have to agree; MHA had an interesting premise but ended up falling into the standard archetypes (I quit when it ended up in a fucking tournament arc and Deku was told how to win against his opponent and he
literally fucked it up in the first second, my
god how can you be that stupid), while BC started off feeling like generic shonen but with enough to set it apart and keep it fun. This meme still holds up:
