At no point did Griffith consider Guts, nor anyone, his equal. Griffith’s entire breakdown hinged on realizing Guts and Casca had greater considerations than worshiping him as a higher being. The metaphor of the Eclipse was Griffith’s personality failings being made manifest.
Griffith broke first because he thought he had everything under control but didn't realize that Guts was listening to him saying 'oh those guys aren't really my friends, because a friend should be able to tell me 'no'', and he didn't realize that his own feelings on that were empty [he didn't want people who could tell him 'no'], and then Guts decided 'I want Griffith to see me as a friend, which means I have to be able to do those things he said he wants of a friend' and then he left and Griffith thought that was the biggest betrayal ever and it made him do all his other mistakes.

Then he realized that he was completely useless as a commander, that Guts had basically supplanted him as the leader of their men and as Casca's lover, and that he could either choose to settle for being an invalid and abandon everything he lived for or accept how much he hated everything and blame it all on Guts. We know what he picked.

To add to this, it wasn't that his own feelings about it were empty; it's that he straight up didn't mean any of what he was saying. His saying "I want people who could tell me no" was all bluster to make himself seem better than he actually was; it's kind of like how an egotistical person will pretend to act humble to get brownie points from others.

I'd argue that Guts had supplanted him as a leader of his section of men, and Casca had started to do the same for the Band of the Hawk as a whole since she was his second. He was so focused on political schemes that he stopped leading his men, and his men were starting to go the way of Alexander the Great's forces, with everyone wanting to live their own lives. They wanted Griffith to succeed so they could reap the reward of him founding his kingdom and move on with their lives.

Someone here still watching NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE? Whats even going on anymore?

Probably this

I just watched classroom of the elite's first season yesterday because I kept hearing about how the protagonist was this genius psycho manipulator like light yagami but I found it boring as shit tbh. The stakes just aren't there and there isn't a single character that's remotely likeable so I really am struggling to find a reason to keep going.

A few months back I saw Hell's Paradise, and honestly? It's an inherently superior version of Demon Slayer.

Now I'm currently watching the new anime by the FMA creator Daemons from The Shadow Realm and so far so good, actually made me chuckle here and there. That and Re:Zero!

Trvke, to be honest. The art is better, the characters are better (Gabimaru in particular blows Tanjiro way the fuck out), the powers are more interesting. The antagonists are WAY more interesting. I've always been baffled at how popular Demon Slayer is. I've always though it was a very middle of the road and safe battle shounen. It never did anything particularly daring. Maybe that's why it got popular with normies.

That's pretty much exactly it, it has bright colors and distinctive character designs and does absolutely nothing daring. Same as any other anime that becomes mainstream popular.

A friend of mine has been watching Chihayafuru and is actually enjoying it which makes me happy. Extremely underrated show. I've been rewatching Hikaru no Go extremely slowly but I am finally almost done with it. It isn't a complete adaptation so I'll have to pick up the manga for the final arc but wow, it still holds up which is pretty good for a show from 2001. Akira is a great rival character, almost on par with someone like Kaiba from YGO in a completely different way though. Also Sai , too many great characters

Also this song is a banger.

Classroom of the elite doesn't work because its "genius" protagonist whole shtick is trying to blend in and live a peaceful student life in an unconventional high school setting, so most of the time the show follows the other protagonist. The plot drags the genius when drama happens so that he can "fix" the drama with his genius offscreen. Apparently the reason why it's popular is because the light novel it is based on is better written and the anime retcons a lot of stuff from the light novel.

If you want better light yagami protagonists I recommend "Akagi" and "One Outs". Both anime are from Death Notes era too.

It also doesn't help that "smart" for an anime/manga character is still generally retarded in the grand scheme. Even Light Yagami is dangerously reckless and gets away with it mainly due to the legendary incompetence of the Japanese police.

Wasn't it was more tied in with his whole 'dreams' thing, like "I could only be friends with someone who is my equal, meaning they've achieved their own dreams, not mine".

He'd also decided he owned Guts after their fight (and it's the one time he said "I want you" instead of "sure join up if that's what YOU want" so I'm not sure his usual philosophy even applied), plus he was instrumental to his plans as a key meathead (like how his counter-assassinations also happened to coincidentally wipe out everyone in the kingdom who'd get in the way of him getting a claim via the princess).
So he might have been a hypocrite, or he mighta just assumed his not-friends would get theirs and become friends after he got his so he saw dipping out before then without explanation as a betrayal, or he might have just been bummed about some plan we don't know about getting cut short.

...Or he was just gay for Guts specifically. Which if I were a betting man, y'know... even Guts picked up on it.

I mean.

Somehow I don't think it was being supplanted as Casca's lover that bothered him.

I barely remember the eclipse itself though. I might have to pick up Berserk again.

That's ufotable for you. That's all modern audiences really care about, if it's got flashy animation and visual effects and a floaty camera, it's literally the greatest thing since sliced bread.
