Finished up the original Gurren Lagann series today. Not sure what to think about it... it's a pretty dope show, but I'm beginning to side with people's opinions that the earlier pre-timeskipped episodes were at its peak. I honestly cannot tell you what the fuck was going on with that new civilization Simon was the head of because they were a little dull. It was only around the last three episodes where shit really started to get rolling again. (And you have no idea how stoked I was to see Viral team up with the gang. Dude's pretty cool)

That ending was disappointing. I knew Nia wasn't, you know, obviously human, but shit did she have to go like that? I would say you can't leave Simon alone, but him being more composed compared to how much of an emotional wreck he was when Kamina died is a sign of his growth, don't get me wrong. But shit, man. That fucked me up a little bit. Besides that, there's still a couple of shit that confused me but maybe a rewatch would help clear that up sometime in the future, along with watching the movies.

I started watching Soul Eater for the first time, out of just morbid curiosity. Two episodes in and... it's alright? It reminds me a lot of Bleach, which was why I was a little hesitant in watching it. I think the only character I'm liking is Maka... and maybe Soul, lol, even though he's kind of a retard.. Anybody got thoughts on this old ass show? And is the manga even worth it?

Post openings/endings that are better than the show they're attached to. I'll start:

I kinda wish people added context why an anime sucks, at least if it wasn't just regular being very generic.

Anyways Ulysses is one of the stupidest first 5 minutes in anime I've seen and is just trash T&A but damn if the opening song isn't awesome

Zetman has three really good things about it:
The Art (in the manga)
Haitani (oh my god is he fucking entertaining. I wish he wasn't trapped in this mediocre but incredibly drawn manga)
The opening

There's a bit more pre-timeskip stuff if you watch the bonus episode that was bundled with the DS game. You might have already seen it but not every site and torrent includes it. The second TTGL movie fleshes out Simon's life after the finale just a little bit. I prefer the tv version of the series overall for multiple reasons but that little extension is really good. Spoiler: He spends the rest of his life digging wells and such for struggling villages, only asking for them to plant Nia's favorite flower in return. Also the way they expanded the final fight was fun as hell, more so if you saw the tv version first.

As for Soul Eater, yeah Maka is pretty much the best character. I love how instead of having a standard tragic backstory with dead parents, she has parents going through a messy divorce because of her manslut dad. Soul is good too, he's fun and his issues and guilt with music are interesting. Everyone else has good designs but those two are clearly where the author's attention was. Though he also spends a lot of time on the bald kid and his crush which goes on forever. I would have liked to see more of the mad scientist guy, I loved his interactions with the snake witch.

I watched the canon half of the anime and read the manga from that point on, and it's alright. Very stylish, good fights, almost great, but it doesn't quite rise above "decent shonen battle series" overall. It tries to have themes in the end but it's sloppy and too late, then the final boss was underwhelming, he'd be better off as a barely defined agent of chaos than some half baked family drama. Still a good final fight though. And some of the thematic stuff is actually good, like having a friend you truly love and care for but realizing after multiple relapses and betrayals that you can't save them from themselves.

No one's more retarded than Black☆Star, but he's got more spirit in him than Naruto so he's okay in my book.
Yeah, maybe you're right lol.

@Trashfire Garbagefuck Oh, I didn't know there was a bonus episode. I watched the series on Netflix (:_(.

My thoughts exactly with Maka and Soul... but where exactly does the canon half ends?

I don't know if I actually consider this theme better than the second season of Minami-ke, Minami-ke Okawari (which I think is a bit underrated although it's still weaker than the first season) but the second season OP is a huge tonal mismatch that seems like it should be attached to a show with more mystery and depth than a slice-of-life comedy about sisters in three different levels of school. (There is one big mystery in Minami-ke, the question of what happened to the parents in both Minami families, but the show never really addresses that.)

Is anyone else reading Ayashimon? I'm interested enough to still keep up with it but I don't know if I can get past how cringe the main character is.
I havent caught up with it in a good while so this might not be the case, but imo its better to see the male lead as the "false protagonist" that leads to the demon yakuza loli.

I also blame nostalgiafags.

Okawari didn't really feel like a comedy. Season 1 was gut-bustingly funny, but I don't recall ever laughing at Okawari.

Manga is generally better, at some point (I think prior to them explaining what was actually up with actual death Death and his friends and their power source, even) the anime had to branch out into it's own canon because it blew past the manga's story. I generally liked the manga ending better and the final boss didn't feel like an ass pull.

Also it was nice that the fucked up moon actually became relevant.
