Yeah besides the setup it's not really original in its main story, though cliché stories are still used for a good reason.

Also new episode of Zombieland Saga Revenge is wholesome fun. We have a minor revelation that Number 0 is a relatively unknown local who's not dead long enough for her family to forget about her, and the subplot with the journo is finally moving forward. Also also a great way of resolving the debt plot point.

Best part was the detail at the start, when leaving the house, Sakura checks both ways twice. Guess she's finally learnt how to stop getting hit by cars

Did I miss something during the episode? I accidentally clicked on your spoiler before watching the ep but still didn't catch it lol. But yeah, just a good fun episode that suited Tae being the driving force of the plot rather than the main character.

In all seriousness, people who blame manga for things that that have nothing to do with people liking manga over American comics never really cared for being an artist.

Just like in the 90’s where people blamed video games and TV for possibly creating excessive violence, they’re doing the same thing to manga as a scapegoat to excuse the fact that no one reads American comics that don’t take their profession seriously.

Happy 25th Anniversary to the magical girl that’s not named Urusei Yatsura or Sailor Moon – Cardcaptor Sakura!

It officially marks the first time this was made into a manga, and a year after the success, the inevitable anime version would be a hit. Nowadays, the omnibus editions are pretty expensive to get, but they do have the Collector’s Edition that came out a few years ago and it looks pretty good.

Either way, I’m glad I both read and watched this out of random. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the new spin off anime series based on the original anime, but I have to agree: Cardcaptor Sakura is still a great anime for its time in the late 1990’s.

I'll go to my grave declaring that Cardcaptor Sakura is the greatest magical girl series of all time.

I remember really enjoying Sakura when I read the series back in high school.

That whole sub-plot with the teacher and one of Sakura's friends creeped me out though. Like, what the fuck was even the point of that?

People always overreact to that scene. Nothing remotely obscene happened between them, and the whole thing played out like a daydream a little kid would have about the teacher she has a crush on. Even with the fact that CLAMP are all fujoshi as Hell, people are seeing something in that scene that just isn't there.

I really liked Plastic Memories, and it does a good job of gut punching you with some of the stories. It's a shame it got an Aniplex western release so the blu-rays are outrageously expensive if you want to go the legal route.

Obligatory do not fist android girls. In a similar vein but with less romance, Dimension W is another good one if you like Plastic Memories. It also has some touching moments with the protagonist and his android partner, but is definitely more action focused. Also there's a Toyota 2000GT and Lexus LFA in the story.

Japan does a lot of student-teacher romance stuff, come to think of it. Maybe it’s a product of the culture and how schools are there vs here.

I should probably check out CCS, if only to see how the MG genre was before it became the more mature and darker type we see now.

On that note, I guess I can compare the genre to that of the mecha genre in terms of development. Like, Utena would be akin to something like the genre's Ideon, with Madoka being the Evangelion.

I don't know, I've found that a lot of Magical Girl shows have always had the darker undercurrent on themes. They might be typically aimed towards a younger audience but that doesn't mean they don't touch on very real issues kids of those age are facing. I've yet to watch Doremi (stuck on my backlog) but I've heard it gets very dark after the first season or so. There's also the notoriously cursed show Minky Momo where she gets hit by a truck at the very end and dies.

I think the bigger thing with newer Magical Girl shows that is also affecting current shows in other genres is the desire to be edgy or "subversive" but not really getting how to do it well.

Shoujo series in particular where a lot of Magical Girl shows stem from, especially the older ones, loved mentally tormenting their characters and dealing with very adult themes. I honestly find the older stuff a lot more fucked up than the more "mature and darker types" that get put out now that just seem to be trying too hard.

If you're looking for really great Magical Girl shows I'd recommend Princess Tutu as it's one of the best in the genre. Too many people pass it over because of the cutesy look and the ballet focus. It's also one of the few series I'd recommend the dub for as it makes some tweaks that help the audience. I guess I'd also recommend Doremi even if I haven't seen it myself yet just because I've seen it praised very highly.

Rika there is at least 10 or 11, and her homeroom teacher, Terada, is anywhere from 20 to 35 when he gives her an engagement ring, which is a yikes that the world of CCS doesn't see that to be a problem.

I got reminded of it during watching Vivy (the new arc shows a lot of promise) but the topic of robot waifus reminded me of the anime Plastic Memories. The show's plot is in a not so distant futures where humanity developed androids.... and they have a life expectancy of the average iphone and needs to be rebooted at the factory at the end of that lifespan since they will otherwise develop a memory leak that will turn them crazy and dangerous. The hero has started working at a company who deals with retrieving the androids before they hurt anyone, which is pretty depressing when you have cases of people taking the androids as lovers or surrogate children/parents.
I haven't watched since it aired, but I like the show's twist on having the humans outlive the androids rather than the usual opposite that happens in media (and it's probably the more likely take on what will happen once we'll have somewhat organic looking androids) and I remember liking the cast and the different plots through the series.

Plastic Memories wasn't an all-time genre-defining classic but at least it was tightly plotted, had an interesting cast and stuck the ending, which is more than I can say for some shows that *are* classics. *cough* Code Geass
I liked it and would recommend it.

Clamp are just a group of degenerate fujoshis.

Edit: Also the new episode of Spider isekai is just bad, and that was a nearly full episode of spider girl. It's a lot of politics that I have no interest in because it doesn't involve the heroine or really spice anything up. There are almost no jokes, spider girl isn't in any danger so there's no stakes, and her just killing elves and humans en masse just feels unpleasant. Like why should I root for her when she is very much a murderer by this point?
And 2 addition things:
1. A thing that's true for a lot of isekai anime - "why are there armies?". The level up are so insanely op that you'd better just made some tiny group of super powered aristocrats to fight wars between countries. It's what happens when getting stabbed is no longer a risk because the guy was 20 levels below you and has a regular iron sword.
2. The whole concept of the show was the heroine getting reincarnated on what everyone would agree is a filler race. Having the setting go "aktualy spiders are god like when they rank up" ruins it.
