It had some really chilling scenes (the scene with the soldier having a nice talk with a girl right before raping her really stuck with me.) but when characters started shouting out talking points right before dying dramatically I was out.
Could have worked for me had it been subtle in any way.

Hmm, never really got that feeling myself. I mean, most of the subject matter goes a bit beyond political opinion. With the exception of maybe the situation regarding
Sarah and whether or not she should abort her rape baby. Which I thought was handled pretty tastefully.

Shu was against it sure, but he's a kid with an idealist point of view, so it makes sense with his character. What Sis had to say about it was very profound though IMO. "You can hate the man who did this to you, but remember, no child is born into this world wanting their mother to reject it."

It definitely made me think about the issue in a different light. But I didn't feel like I was being preached at.

But hey, that's just me.

Agreed. The universe itself is pretty cool and some scenes are memorable but I felt like the writing got bad at times like the plot would bend so Shu's simplistic views wouldn't be wrong and later ignore him doing in essence the opposite of what he preaches. Like, it's okay to have a naive character lost in an unforgiving universe but then you can't make him your spokesperson. I'm thinking about
Warboys asking Shu for informations about Hamdo's fortress so they could go kill him and him refusing because war is bad, despite the fact Hamdo literally kills thousands/millions whenever he feels like it.
The fat mom adds another layer of this with her refusing to give Ra Ra Ru even though she's a huge military asset, as sad as it sounds. Refusing by threatening the soldiers with a rifle, which is not very different from any war tactics she criticizes. Then the village is getting raided which makes the whole point of protecting Ra Ra Ru moot. She gets kidnapped either way, except she has to witness everyone dying in front of her before. Cool move, fat mama.
And the warboys you're supposed to dislike? They had the only idea that could've worked. Use Ra Ra Ru as a hostage to save the village and get Hamdo's head, potentially saving millions of other lives. It doesn't work because the plot doesn't want, but hey.
So at this point it's pretty bad and the cast is gonna get enslaved. The writers realize they have to solve this somehow, and how? Through superior military power. Ra Ra Ru, as the superior military asset she was since the beginning, floods the fuck out of Hamdo fortress and he gets killed by some bitch. The anti-war story's resolution is drowning enemy soldiers and executing their commander. Inflicting an anti-abortion subplot to a minor rape victim wasn't very tasteful either.
Animation (Shu falling from insane heights especially) were pretty great though. And that black/white scene (yes, THAT one) was really something.

There is an incredible ugly manga called Neighbor Nr. 13 which has (in my opinion) a good story. Bad art doesn't mean bad story- it's the same with video games. Deadly Premonition is a great game with shitty graphics.

A Chinese-Japanese co-produced animated series is made.


Tencent and Success announced on Tuesday that they are producing a Chinese-Japanese co-produced animated series adaptation of the Tencent comic Chōyū Sekai (World of Super Sand Box). The animation will premiere in both China and Japan on January 12. Success is streaming a promotional video for the series, with Japanese theme song by Riho Iida. The anime is described as a "miraculous story about fiction, reality, and people's thoughts merging." Success is a Japanese-Chinese amusement company that is involved in smartphone, web, and console games, as well as pachislot (pachinko slot) machines. Series premieres in China and Japan on January 12.
