Anime is neither good nor bad

It's not a good idea to tar an entire medium with the same brush because of a couple of bad apples. Just like with every medium out there, 90% of it is completely rubbish and 10% of it is actually worthwhile, but you need to dig a little to get to anything decent. I'm sure there's plenty of shows out there for you, but you simply haven't found them yet.

I'm sure you'd tell me the same thing if I said that all crimmies are slop written for insane cat ladies with no grasp on reality.

As an aside, if you truly believe in equality between the sexes, drop feminism like the sack of moldy potatoes that it actually is and go and find our Lord and Saviour and the Most Holy Theotokos.

That's absolutely true, except the problem is it evolved in the direction of appealing to autists and gooners since Japanese otaku and hikkikomori are the ones buying the merchandise.

It started out primarily as cartoons for children (The most popular manga magazine is "Shonen Jump", with "Shonen" meaning an adolescent boy) and was taken over by adults in a state of arrested development, like you'll see with some western cartoons.

That's also why a lot of older anime are more tolerable, while modern anime features loads of noseless moe blob doke doke high school bullshit and storylines/tropes that will come off as weird and puerile to any normal adult who hasn't been conditioned by years of excessive exposure to overstimulating low content media.

I don't think that's fair to throw at the whole medium really. Something like Akira or Serial Experiments Lain isn't really, a lot of the Lupin movies aren't really that more sexist than something like a James Bond, sometimes even making their characters objects of ridicule for that exact thing, or Ghibli works like Spirited Away.

There's also just a load of really highly stylistic stuff, something like Cyber City Odeo 808.

It's easier if you go back 20 years but there's still good stuff all over. It's not a genre afterall, it's as or more varied than normal television. It's just the slop that sells the most is the most visible.

Manga is even better for this, a story like Sanctuary or 20th Century Boys (or Billy Bat, I love that work by him even more), or Uzumaki (which will be an anime finally this year) or even some more modern action series like Jagannnn might use sex as a plot point at points, but they're not really fanservicey.

If any of you like 80s manga and haven't read Sanctuary btw, read it now. Brilliant series about two brothers who want to take over Japan - one via the DIET (the governent), one via the Yakuza. There is some manga nudity in there, but more to sell the gangster lifestyle than to titillate you.
 
Morally, Anime is bad in the same way movies are. The negative rep its gaining is eclipsing any exceptions. Hollywood has done far more damage than a few good movies worth and the fans being retarted makes it worse..

As far as visually, yea it can be pretty, tho people like to ignore majority of anime looks like dogshit like movie lovers do for cinema. It's for the same reason that its shit already done/trying to catch a fad and thus make half assed product that people will consume.

Edit: Damn people beat me to the cinema and consoomerism points already. Go ahead and consoom, thats fine and all to enjoy, but to consoom and say how great it is to do so is pretty fucking gay.
 
Honestly, the only thing worse than anime is the fact that you people are taking this discussion seriously. I think there's another important aspect of Japanese culture you should all consider instead.

Yeah I usually watch older cyber-punk-y anime movies if anything nowadays. I used to have patience for the annoying tropes as a teen too, loved Tenchi Muyo and Love Hina and stuff... I suppose though, they SET a lot of those tropes, didn't they.

Also, Tenchi's manga was really short and only really good as a companion piece to the series.

Was always into Mech stuff myself, you know, just the standard stuff, nothing obscure as far as I can remember.

maybe i havent been reading any american comics post-2010, but the capeshit fatigue is real, and they are a blight on this medium like how isekai or dnd ripoff litrpg pozzed anime/manga as of late

sorry dc and rigamorty, making your show tranime will not make them any better

Some stuff I just pulled from my Plex list. Quite a few of these are just 6-7/10 movies, they're not like an Akira or a Ghost in the Shell, but if you like that kind of anime, they're pretty much all decent watches.

Not really all that cyberpunky but Perfect Blue, Belladonna of Sadness is beautiful (it's basically watercolour in film), Paprika etc too. Mostly what I like about anime is when they do weird, whacky or super futuristic, but not the "10 year old with big tits" kind of weird. It is a shame that's so prevalent because it means I could never convince someone like my mother to watch Akira or Perfect Blue.
 
I think there is anime that’s really artistic and cool, it’s just vastly outweighed by slop content for manbabies to the point where liking anime can be considered a red flag.
 
It definitely got wise over time. There's still good stuff, but like gaming it's much more hit-and-miss now. You can pick a random N64 game and odds are it's at least decent, good luck doing that with Switch, even if we give it a handicap and exclude digital rubbish...and Switch has the best library of this generation, so that says a lot.

If you go on Crunchyroll and pick a random anime you're going to throw up because of how bad it is. I know, because I've done it.
 
Most anime is just adapted manga that someone picked out because they thought it'd sell a lot of merch. Animation is an expensive medium to produce and that's even when you're treating the staff like slaves so they all want something that'll get the usual suspects shelling out cash on plushies, figurines, posters, and all other assorted dumb shit.
 
Not all artistic mediums are created equal. Like was mentioned, animes are incredibly expensive to produce, so only things that have huge moneymaking potential can be made. And because people have shit taste, basically only borderline porn can make money. Anime movies aren't targeted by this the same way, and imo that's why they tend to be so much more artistic.
 
The part that I don't get is why even bother going on Internet forums and trying to convince people it's not shit, like what could you possibly gain from it? Are the stickers really that valuable?
 
Anime is a visual art form. As such it is very subjective. When you factor in the internet, you get hyper subjectivity. I'm old and shit, so I remember trading VHS tapes of anime way before it became anything in the American collective psyche. It's by far not my favorite genre of animation. It's not good or bad itself, as usual, it's the people that obsess over it that make the public perception of it tend to the negative. There's anime series or movies you will like, and shitloads you will regard as trash if you get into it. It's art.
