Whereas we all remember Prince of Egypt for its soaring, operatic music sequences, David's music is much more modest and less timeless. Also, the visual style is polished, but not outstandingly distinctive. But, there's a lot to appreciate about David. The film's Saul is especially tragic and complicated -- the movie foregrounds the difficult aspects of the story rather than trying to brush over them. There are a lot of clever little touches in the film's character and environment designs; for instance, the Philistines have a lot of fish icons worked into their clothing and weapons. Little touches like that please me. Also, I think this might be the first time I've ever seen the Amalekites portrayed in a movie. On the whole, I really enjoyed it.Been meaning to watch it. My theater was supposed to play it, but it had a water main burst just before I had a chance to catch it back in December. The damage was so bad they only reopened a couple weeks ago.
I wish Jonathan had gotten a little more screen time, but I suppose when you're making a Bible movie for kids you have to economize somewhere.
