That's true and also Dobby sadly seemed to miss the potential life lesson that people would care a whole lot less about his fetishes if he was open about them instead always on the defensive.
Bad thing is: You could fill a barn with all the confidence Dobson doesn't have. So that ain't gonna happen.
He's simply incapable of going "I like that stuff. Yeah. So?" Strangely enough, one of the things Dobson seems to have liked (and used a lot for his inflation art), Azumanga Daioh, was drawn by a guy who started out on erotic stuff before making his slice of life mangas. What's even more interesting: There was a guy who made really well-drawn porno doujins of a series called "Yotsuba!" (which is by the same guy as Azumanga Daioh) and this doujin-artist was in fact so good at mimicking the original style, rumors popped up it might be the Mangaka himself doing these doujins. Ultimately, the Mangaka hired the Doujin-artist since he was so good at doing that style.
This isn't that uncommon, it seems. The guy who made "Ghost in the Shell" has a larger amount of erotic stuff than regular. In Japan, being good at drawing porn is a possible start to become a regular comicbook artist.
What I'm trying to say: with enough confidence, Dobs could have made regular comics and his erotic stuff. If only he ever was mature enough to stand up for his fetish.
The way he behaved, that boat has sailed a long time ago. In his panic to hide it, he invoked one hell of a Streisand Effect and now, all he can do is meekly pointing at it, try to aknowledge it, but all he does is "Yeah I did this a decade ago and people still pretend it was important!". If he at least admitted that it was an important phase to him personally, but by trying to sweep it under the rug wholesale, he just manages to appear very, very insincere.
Then again, it's inflation... a fetish so absurdly pathetic and embarassing, even bronies and people into sweaty armpits justifiably mock it.
Edit:
You don't even have to go so far as to take artists from Japan into consideration.
Phil Foglio, creator of the webcomic "Girl Genius", used to do erotic comics.
Studio Foglio makes little money on Patreon (~300 bucks a month), since their focus is on selling comic books and they've got a track-record of updating their webcomic 3 times a week (with only short downtimes every year or so) for the past 10 years.
I love how he claims he drew the pic because he got frustrated over the anime club of his college. So it took him 4 years till he decided to draw that thing? Bullshit. The only reason he drew it was because people pointed out to him that he obviously lifts from Rumiko Takahashi and others and he decided to be an "ingenius" troll and make fun of what they liked. Only to screw it up for him even worse
The reason he brings up why he did it changes a lot, depending on what kind of asspat he wants to get.
Originally, he said he didn't like how western cartoons were slowly becoming more and more like anime in style.
Why would that mean he has to draw his horrible OCs beating up little kids, sexually assault a defenseless woman, though?
Might be a bit off-topic to this image, but I just want to express that I really,
really hate the style of
Jon-Arbuckle-clone Gamerdude McMullet and Smugfield. Especially the ugly stub-noses and the way the eyebrows sorta wrap around these dead, soulless saucer-eyes.
As if the smug pandering soapbox bullshit wasn't enough to drive a stake through his comic's hearts, Dobson sure manages to kill all interest by picking a style that is plain ugly to look at.
