Ho boy... speaking as an anime-enthusiast, it's really disheartening to see Dobbers spew so much nonsense about something he always insinuates to have been part of "before it was cool".
He wants to pose as this connaisseur that happened to stumble upon this fine media before it became mainstream but fails on all accords.
He's talking about a media as if it was merely a genre with only exactly one art style. This baffles me. He wants to come of as this insightful expert, and all he ever consumed in this particular media was at best merely surface-material of the most mainstream shit available. He chastises the style for being bland, when in fact, he just never bothered to look past the most popular things.
Every big artist has his own, unique style (which is more than Dobson could say after over 2 Decades of drawing):
Blade of the Immortal (Samura Hiroaki)
Eden - It's an endless World (Endo Hiroki)
Blame! (Nihei Tsutomu)
FLCL (Ueda Hajime)
This is what Dobson describes as a "lack of variety in facial features", huh? Some artists are a tad notorious for making characters that suffer a bit from "Sameface disease" - such as Nihei Tsutomu or Sonada Kenichi, but oftentimes those artists have a different focus. Nihei excels at
surreal oversized architecture and Sonoda is a genius when it comes to
firearms and
cars.
But the next part of that quote just slays me:
"Guts" from "Berserk" (Made by Miura Kentaro)
"Kenshiro" from "Fist of the North Star" (Made by Hara Tetsuo)
Of course, that's just a very elaborate way to say "Dobson has no fucking clue what he's talking about. He never had and never will have. Full stop."
