Well, Dobson is pretty much totally incapable of interacting with people in an adult manner. His basic concept of of empathy is "oh you're feeling sad about something shitty? Here's a cute picture of a kitten saying something sweet!". He's literally emotionally on par with a kindergartener, so when he saw Zelda dealing with complex emotions, he tried to make a shitty joke in an attempt to lighten things up because he pretty much can't process complex emotions.
It was the same with the teenage lesbian who told him off. She kept bringing up actual hardships that LGBT people face and how he's objectifying them, while he kept going on and on about the cartoon.
