I'm pretty sure that wasn't a gag. Alex's first design would've had some merit of being mistaken as a man. You redesigned her as a Captain Syrup knockoff with noticeable tits, Dobson. This "curse" you speak of, as Ido mentioned, sounds like something you got off tumblr.
Maybe I got it wrong, but afaik, Gypsypirate was designed rather androgynous to have the hilarious running gag of her being mistaken for a guy all the time. Then Dobson decided it was time for some cheesecake, and thus gave her a new design that emphasized her hips and tits and revealed more skin (doing this is empowering to womynkind and progressive when Dobs does it, y'know). To keep the awesome running gag, he had to fall back to the "A wizard did it" explanation of a curse...

And speaking of which: Did he ever adress this in the comics (like showing an origin story?) or did he just drop that exposition and was done with it?
But what really gets me, with his current behaviour, I have NO DOUBT, he's going to portray the people that misgender Gypsypirate as being dickish shitlord antagonists - even though they can't help misgendering her, since it's the curse affecting them.

Instead of a silly curse that makes people misgender her, Dobs could make it so Women aren't likely to become pirate captains and thus Gypsypirate has to crossdress in order to get respect and the obedience of her crew. Basically a bit like "The Associate" only with pirates. This would also add the option that Lesbiankick is one of the few people that know the secret, which strains any possible relationships between Gypsypirate and Lesbiankick. Same with Doormat. Would make their interaction a LOT more interesting.

The setup would also allow jabs at 'male dominated space' and social commentary, which would be silly and lame, but it would be a hell of a lot more interesting to read than "TEEHEE He called her a boy, though she's a girl! This is sooo not childish and overdone!"
Which will happen first
Alex ze pirate reboot issue 1
Or
Sonichu 11
I heard it'll be a double feature, published by Marvel with spin-off shows and games by Disney and Nintendo respectively.

So, this is what Dobsons thought process probably looked like:

1) I think it's funny, if Alex is mistaken for a guy! Like Ranma 1/2!
2) But I really want to draw her boobs!
3) I can have both, if I put a curse on her, so everyone thinks she is a guy!
3.5) There is no way this will ruin my (hackneyed) running gag! Right?
4) (several years of stagnation)
5) Noooooo! I did that curse thing to show how bad it is to mis-gender people and not because I wanted to make Alex more attractive and a gag, that was old even before Ranma 1/2 aired in the US.

Didnt he just basically rip off the red head girl from slayers and make her a pirate....and eventually gave her tits.

I don't know if anyone pointed this out to you idiots in the last 5 pages, but I'm really frustrated at seeing 20+ pages of "LOL they're PAYING to troll" and "HAHA just RAISE your contribution minimum Dobson!"

That's not how Patreon works and he even says this. They DO NOT CHARGE YOU until the end of the first cycle. You put up a fake amount with a credit card and then do whatever and then kill the sub later on.

Her first design was fairly androgynous before one of Dobson's fans mistaken Alex for a guy. The joke (now with new Alex, doesn't make any sense and still poorly done) falls on its face. Dobson did some exposition like Atea and Sam having backstories, but were thrown out for "wacky hijinks". Other than that, I don't think so.
