I have mixed feelings about Dobson rebooting Alex ze Pirate. Usually you reboot something because the original garnered a certain about of interest and fanbase. Alex ze Pirate always looked like the Family Circus of webcomics to me. Does anyone really give a shit?

On the other hand, starting over from square one is honestly the only way to make Alex ze Pirate worthy of existence. But then when I start thinking about what would need to change the only answer is literally everything. Dobson should just make a brand new comic unrelated to AzP.

EDIT: I just realized I have read AzP before. It's just that my brain refuses to recall any memories of reading it for reasons of self preservation.

And that's the problem, anything he touches will come out as shit. No matter if it's Ze Pirate, the Blue Bear or anything else. Fucker's about as talented as the Walker siblings in that regard.

He's not going to live down the Ridley tracing scandal at all. With each piece he comes out with, he loses more and more credibility due to sheer laziness. He's already hit Antarctica.
 
"tracing itself, either directly or eyeballing"?? Well yes, the latter is a learning tool, because it's called drawing from reference. Eyeballing isn't tracing. Dammit Dobson stop retweeting weird misinformation.

I've heard other artists say tracing is a valuable learning tool but I fail to understand how. The best way to draw is to understand the underlying structure, starting with a line of action and simple shapes. Tracing doesn't teach you any of that.
 
If tracing is a learning tool then how many Big Bens does Dobson have to trace before his work starts to improve.

This, and by tracing you also pick up any mistakes that the artist whose works you're tracing has made. There really is no quick way around it, you cannot build anything without first laying down the foundations. "It's my style" just doesn't cut it. Learn the rules before you break them.

I agree. Tracing is fine for practice, to get a style down, but never, never should it be put into an actual, published (and in this case, paid!) work. It's only for learning purposes, if anything!

I dare him to totally annihilate the chances of Alex and Lesbian kick as a couple forever. Destroy it totally. Make them both straight. Go on, Dobson, it's the easiest thing to do. You won't even need to come up with new designs or anything.

(also as for learning tools, tracing can work, yes, but I think another viable way is non-traced copying, as in just having the reference to the side and make that exact same pose yourself. Then when copying, just change some stuff around (characters/ect) I wouldn't call it a viable way of doing actual art since it's really just as bad as tracing but it means being able to draw that thing for yourself and putting in any needed deviations. Therefore it's less "copying mistakes" and more "identifying/fixing" :3)

In all seriousness, he should have dropped the idea of developing a Pirate themed comic the very second One Piece became mainstream, there is simply no other way around it. Eiichiro Oda took the pirate theme, added a personal twist of his own that elevated the concept to creative heights noone had seen in the genre and he ran it, working for 18 years now and he is reaping the fruits of his labor. Wake up Dobson, there is nothing you can do with the Pirate theme that could even compare to the Magnus Opus that One Piece is. No matter what, your comic will always be considered an "also ran". AzP is not original enough, funny enough, let alone likable enough to make a niche for itself. Any artist with a shred of self respect would have thrown the concept to the recycling bin and start a new project/concept from scratch with a different theme attached to it.
