Someone at work has printed out and posted a Dobson cartoon by the office printer. I nearly pissed myself when I saw it. It's the cartoon where his printer is low on cyan.

Dobson, if you are reading this, someone out there thinks one of your cartoons was funny.

Well when people are paying you to do something, you should bloody well do it! Hell, wish I could do stuff only when I feel like it and get $80-$90 a month. Ingrate.

Oh, Tom Preston! Since when did a blue ewok guy like you know anything about the "real world"...?
I get the feeling that if he does have a job, either he's giving no shits about it, or his bosses are some of the worst for letting him bitch about this. Also, You're right Dobbo, We can't have perfect art (as everyone has a different opinion about what's perfect).

But what we should have, is art that doesn't want people to claw their eyes out. Or the smug bastards that boast about them either.

Funny thing is, there's plenty of artists who aren't good at drawing "on model". There's probably not many outside of pros that can fully imitate something perfectly and even then that requires a lot of model sheets.

But they have something else. Style. And I don't mean "style as an excuse to not draw decently in any way*
Funny thing is, this is also true for some of the better Japanese animators out there too. They more than likely follow model sheets, but add their own take of the character as well.

Pitty then that Dobsy the Bear doesn't use reference materials more. It'd help a bit. Or maybe he does and like everything else, fucks it up big time. He's never brought that part up, so maybe he doesn't.

Supply and demand, Dobson. A pretty simple economic concept that applies to virtually any sort of business.
Isn't that basiclly what Patreon is?, "Pay me monthly and I'll work for you daily"?. And in case of artist, you're supposed to upload art.

Heck, I'm sure people wouldn't complain if he doesn't upload something daily but at least put effort into whatever he's doing. Lets go even lower, I'm sure people wouldn't give him that much shit if he had a better attitude to begin with.

I've seen Patreon of artists that are not really that good, but they are humble and you can clearly see they are always trying their best and that's enough to support them. Here's an example I found while searching for DarkISO Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/howxu?ty=h (Be sure to read his "About" column), this guy instead of doing what most Patreon and Dobson do (I make art, give me money NOW), he's actually trying hard to be a better artist and is asking for support because his economic situation isn't exactly great.

I still can't believe Dobson can't grasp the concept behind "job". Patreon isn't free money, it's a JOB, people PAY you to do something, they are not DONATING money.

I mean, he's pretty much demanding that others see him-- and by extension his art-- as being worthy of money.
So, yes. The two are inextricably intertwined at this point. Dobson make art = Dobson make money. Not that difficult of a concept to grasp.
This guy just chaps my ass. Like, so much. :(

Monsters Like to Read Too!

This is an illustration that I took all the way to the inking process before it started to fall apart. Basically no matter how I looked at it, it looked too much like Monsters Inc.

You know what? Between the squid-girl sketches and the above unfinished piece, I have to agree with those saying how...less worse his sketches are compared to his finished works. Granted, I'm no artist, so there may well be all sorts of anatomy/perspective/whatever errors I haven't noticed. But damn, these sketches and unfinished works we've been seeing seem so much more spontaneous, so much livelier - and perhaps most importantly, so less uglier than his finished works. Which leads me to wonder - just what is it that leads him to screw up so badly in the final inking/effects process? Is it some lack of skill or technical ability on his part? (If it is a technical issue of some sort - one any Kiwis think they can identify - I'd love to know just what!) Or is it some strange form of self-sabotage? One which, each and every time, ensures the smooth transition from a sketch with some sort of potential to a monstrosity with mismatched limbs and 90% of the time, a smug, leering expression? (The sort of expression you'd expect to see on a poster captioned "CHILDREN - DO NOT ACCEPT SWEETS FROM THIS MAN". Or bear. Or lesbian pirate.)

I wish someone would actually pay him to do it because you just fucking know he wouldn't do it. Someone could pay him a shitload of money to draw something within a strict time limit and he wouldn't be able to get it done. Guarantee it.

I'm afraid we've already been there - see that exchange of messages regarding the commission he took four months to complete. (Yeah - I still haven't got over that one!)

How I adore that "sensitive-artist-I-can-only-work-when-I'm-inspired" schtick - the excuse of choice for the terminally lazy!

Random little thought: When you're a cartoonist, you CAN get away with working extremely slowly - if you're Aaron Diaz, who creates approximately one comic page every half year or so. But Diaz HAS unironic fans - while Nookie Bear lost any fans he might have had long ago, even SJWs find him annoying and/or amusing - which is because he can create characters one can identify with... if you're this guy: :neckbeard:

Nobody can identify with Nookie Bear's characters, though, they're only good for punching.

But if they're completely normal things that no one obsesses over, talks about, or finds weird/progressive, how is Dobson gonna feel good about himself for supporting them? He doesn't even think.

Quite so - there's also Tracy Butler, the woman behind "Lackadaisy Cats". As I understand it, she would take months to turn out a single page of her comic. (For all I know, she may still be at it!) But because her work is such high quality, her many fans were/are prepared to wait. But when the work is mediocre at best? ...What's the phrase I'm looking for? ...Oh yes! I remember!

Not trying to sound condescending but... like... the major press conference schedule at E3 is easily visible through... you know... Google.

I have no expectation that it'll get anywhere, but because I'm bored, here's a little A-logging from me on El Dobbo's new journal:

(Speaking of Dobson, why is he still calling himself Tom Preston on DA if he doesn't mind using his real name elsewhere on the Internet?)

Dumbass Dobson calls people sexist for creating female characters and then wonders why people are uncomfortable creating female characters.

Get rid of the SJW schtick and excessive pride and just draw inflation porn. Hell, draw lesbians kissing. Nobody wants to see random unfunny crossovers or pedobear cosplays.
Inflation fetish artists are probably rare enough that Dobson's Patreon would double, triple, or quadruple if he openly did it and went to the right places. Unless he's outcast in that community too somehow.

The hapless blue ewok has backed himself into a corner.

Porn/fetish art is where the real money is - But Dobson cannot now lose any crusading credential in front of his SJW peers...
