At the risk of being lynched, I never thought Dobson's cartoon art was that bad.
It may not be up to the highest Disney standards, but truth be told, a lot of comic strips with even lower art and writing quality get published in newspapers and reap their creators money all the time. Which I guess makes his self-pitying attitude all the less understandable. Even if he didn't bother with improvement, he'd easily find his niche making comics or political cartoons for some publication out there. What's his problem?
That's what makes it so frustrating to me. I doubt people would give 2 shits if he was just another bad artist who was doing it for fun instead of having Dob's ego over his own laziness.
I'm confused, is he concerned that people would make fun of his voice. Or his taste in music? Because that makes no sense whatsoever. Also nice to see the floating eyebrows are back. And that his coloring and shading still haven't changed an iota.

Yeah, it really does look like Dobbs took a cue from Tim Buckley for that balloon. And at this point, I really doubt he's ever going to shade in anything but black.

As has been pointed out, Dobson isn't a terribad artist, there's a few things he's well capable of doing but it all boils down to his unwillingness to improve anything that he's bad at.
Spice that up with his attitude towards criticism and his incredibly nasty, condescending personality and you have a recipe for failure.
Really, if Dobson was just another semi-professional cartoonist who's not good enough to have a break-through but not bad enough to completely drop off the internet's radar, noone would bat an eye at him.
If he was just humbly making his comics, maybe write a tweet or blog entry about stuff that annoys him, we wouldn't be here.
But Dobson is a pompous, hypocritical jerk that insults the few fans he still has and values whining on twitter higher than his chosen line of work.
And that's the image we get before we even take a look at his work.
Look at his comics, what do you see?
In theory, SYAC could be an entertaining strip about the trials and tribulations of doing comic art, but it's just a soapbox for Dobsons inflated ego and a platform to make horrible, horrible strawman-comics about whatever pissed off Dobson. Oftentimes it's hypocritical, self-servicing, self-righteous bullshit, that has nothing to do with Dobson being an artist. I mean, the guy tried to chastise the designer of Dragon's Crown and Hideo fucking Kojima. Kojima could fling his own feces at a wall and it would somehow turn out to become a groundbreaking video game with a cult following. And Dobson, a guy who's never really been employed in his chosen line of work, wants to tell him what he can and can't do. In his comic about being a cartoonist.
Alex ze Pirate? Don't even get me started. If SYAC is unremarkable and generic in terms of looks, then AzP is pretty much stryofoam on white toast levels of bland.
The characters are pretty much either really boring, overused stereotypes (without any deviation to make them memorable) or they are outright stolen from other works. The entire cast is pretty much Ranma shoved into a chinese knock-off One Piece setting.
Apparently, Dobson doesn't need to be the perfect artist cause his focus is more on telling a story (his own words!) and now look at his Magnum Opus that is AzP:
It's a really lame, derivative work devoid of any creativity whatsoever. It's also a comic without a real story. It's just "Here's a bunch of whacky characters doing pirate stuff... and stuff."
And then there's minor stuff that didn't go nowhere, like his story about some detective douchebag, his story about lipstick-lesbians and his story about some guy travelling to a different world or something.
Nah, Dobson isn't completely bad at art, but he's not that good either. There's a lot of webcomic artists and hobby enthusiasts that give him a run for his money. And looking on his ability to tell a story, create interesting worlds and memorable characters: He outright sucks at it.

I find it to be an odd pose for that reason and why are they doing exactly the same thing? He could have at least had the other arm do something else or use some kind of negative space there.

Dobberino needs to go back to that thing everyone did when they were kids, where the hands in every drawing would conveniently be behind the back, or covered by something.
In case I didn't get it across earlier, my question was meant to be somewhat rhetorical. I know Dobson's issue is his whiny, egoistical attitude more than his art skills. What I imagine is that he's bitter that he couldn't get himself into some prestigious animation company like his roommate Chesworth and can't deal with the fact that he wasn't up to the task yet. You know, some kind of entitlement mentality like spoiled kids have.
In addition, I have a difficult time taking his current pro-social justice pretensions at face value. It's all right for cartoonists to have political slants, otherwise we wouldn't have political cartoons. But I can't take his anti-sexualization attitude at face value after learning about his inflation-porn phase. I think he's doing it mostly because social justice has become a major fad in the tumblr age, and he wants to sell himself to a new, younger crowd. If he can't win the other artists over, maybe the SJW kids will support him, right?

I like that had he stuck to anime, Dobby would fit the bill for the fat, balding, pervy otaku stereotype. The same stereotype Anno has such a huge hateboner for.
