It's been clear from the start of SYAC that Dobson is clearly a bitter, depressed person.

Either he needs to find peace somehow with his soul (religion, maybe?) or needs to find a new hobby.

Sometimes I've felt doubtful about whether a certain piece is worth it, or if I can even go anywhere from where I am. But I'm a no-name nobody unlike Preston who's got an easy way out of both: people pay lots of attention to him and if he really wants to move forward then there's a plethora of people willing to give him pointers.
Oh yeah, he just wants to say "fuck you" to all of those guys, my bad!

These revelations do not surprise me. As we know, Inspiration is a Big Variable.

One thing I've learned as a writer is that inspiration has very little to do with working on a big project. It helps, is essential in the beginning, but before long it reaches a point where you just have to buckle down and work a little every day. Believe it or not, you can actually start writing - or drawing - when you're not in the mood and, by working through it, get into the zone. Inspiration is not a pre-requsite for artistic output.

Getting over a lack of inspiration can be tough, but it's something all artists need to face.

I don't even find being inspired and actually being in the mood to draw mutually exclusive. Sometimes I draw with no inspiration and just end up having fun playing with motion lines or facial expressions or whatever other doodles strike my fancy.

On the other hand, inspiration can come when I'm not in the mood to draw and moments like those bring in barely-started drawings that I don't want to actually deal with.

And you're right. You can get in the zone without inspiration or even being in the mood to draw. Actual decent illustrations come from buckling down and working, not dicking around in photoshop for a few minutes.

Absolutely. In fact, some of the pieces I end up most proud of come from working when I had no inspiration and wasn't "feeling it". Pushing through those moments when you just don't want to be doing anything can actually be really rewarding. Sometimes they come out really well! - Likely because I have to pay more attention to it unlike when I'm inspired and things just flow - and when they don't come out well, hey, every drawing, even the bad ones, has something worthwhile to it and at least something was accomplished.

I can sympathize with his frustration, but this is the sort of moment where you really separate yourself from the hobbyists. No matter how fun a job is, there's going to be days you just don't want to do it, and you have to prove you can step up to the task.

A lot of his stress is coming from the fights he keeps picking with people about things completely unrelated to his art anyway and so I repeat:

Preston, shut up and draw!

Kinda reminds me of this

What's sad is he seemingly wants people from the "biz" to comment on his stuff, yet I don't think he sends his work out to be critiqued. As a person getting into the art/animation "biz"; we ain't got time for that. I'm on the bottom of the food chain, but if you want to be reviewed, you need to go out of your way to get feedback. People from the "biz" aren't just going to browse deviantart, find your shit, and take time out of their precious schedule to asspat you. If he was really wanting feedback or wanting to find a job, he would go to the CTN (animation/art conference) in November.

Also, I hate how he calls the industry the "biz".......fucking stupid.

Nobody needs religion.

He'd just use that as another excuse in his already impressive repertoire, always.

I can't help but think that if Dobson suddenly became religious he would accomplish nothing but to piss off all the people of said religion. It seems to be his state of being.

He would never consider going to something like that because he knows that the people would just tell him he's a mediocre hack and they want somebody who is actually talented. Dobson just doesn't want to admit he gave up on his dream way back in college. So he'll talk about how he hopes someone will spot his art and hire him, but at the same time refuse to take steps towards getting an interview for an art-based job.

I never know whether these pictures are by him, or are other people poking fun at him. It's like everything he does to be funny totally backfires. It's just like what I said about his bear avatar, he is his own caricature.
