What the hell is the blonde guy so scared about. Does Alex abuse him in the comics or something?
One could guess that she could threaten to tear down the blonde guy's patriarchy. Then again, the image made me think of "snu-snu" for some reason.

It's not even that. He just doesn't put in effort to what he draws, and it just gets even worse as time goes on. It's why he gets pissed off when "trolls and haters" tell him his art was better in college. Because he actually still had potential and was obviously putting effort into his drawings. These days he doesn't care because all of his young, misguided fans line up to praise him no matter what little effort he puts out, short of actual stick figures.
Dobson could have just drew stickmen and people would still suck his e-dick for it.

With how half-assed Preston's stuff is, I've started wondering if he even enjoys doing art at all. I don't understand how someone who loves to create art (and claims that they're the bee's knees) could have such a stagnant, boring art style with no growth whatsoever.

The funny thing is, that I looked them up and the first couple of images of "Urusei Yatsura Lum" resulted into pictures of some generic, green-haired anime girl topless and of a professional gravure idol specializing in bikini pics. Oh, Dobsonbear...You and your Japanese myths of...Boobs.
It's generic because it is all based on Lum. Lum is ground zero for that style of character. It was new at the time - 30+ years ago.

Fuck it, I'm critiquing this image.

Problem one: I can't really tell what's going on in this picture. On the one hand, you have Alex posed smugly like she's about to triumph over something, and her crew members are throwing confetti (or is that rice?). On the other hand, her crew looks pissed or stressed about something, while Alex looks really smug. Are they sarcastically throwing confetti for her? Did she threaten to kill their families if they didn't? If this is a moment that calls for confetti, why are they so bothered?

Problem two: The shading and composition. Okay, clearly the hole in the wall is supposed to be the light source, as seen by the glowing yellow sky and the fact that Alex is back-lit. But shouldn't the wall also be back-lit? It's hard to tell that this is a defined light source when the wall is brighter than the light source. The area inside the walls should be darker, with light spilling onto the floor and the rubble, but not much else.

Also, the two crew members don't have consistent shading. Pissbaby-boy has his shadows on the left and Lesbian-rapist has her shadows on the right. They share the same light source so there's no reason to indicate that their shading is coming from a different direction.

Finally, Alex's shadow on the floor isn't shaped like her. I don't really get what he was going for there.

Problem three: The color scheme is atrocious. It suffers from the same problem as Disneyfan01's earlier works in the fact that they just decide "this part is this color" and they pick the brightest version of this color that they can. Dobson just decides "this kid is blonde and his jeans are blue" so he goes with bright yellow and bright blue.

He doesn't set the mood with his light and shadows either. Light has color, and in that regard so does shadow. He didn't have to stick with white and grey. For instance, a yellow light-source could go well with shadows that are tinted purple, and because of that he could narrow his color pallet to be closer in ranges of those two colors.

Basically I'm talking about doing something like this. (This was a five minute edit by the way.)

I'll provide some context.

- He's making a reference to an anime called Urusei Yatsura.
- One of the main characters is an oni
- Those are beans they are throwing
- That is the laziest way of drawing beans I ever seen
- In Japanese mythology, you can drive away oni by throwing beans at them; much like throwing holy water at the supernatural

Having said that, I still don't get the point of the picture or what any of that has anything to do with feminism.

Once upon a time he probably did enjoy making art and drawing. Probably everyone in middle and high school told him how talented he is and that he could totally become a professional cartoonist, maybe even an animator. Then Dobson went to art college and suddenly he didn't stick out anymore, and the teachers actually critiqued his work. A major case of butthurt occurred and after that he didn't really like drawing anymore, although all of his followers on DA continued to praise him and he couldn't think of anything else he could actually do besides draw anyways. So he began to half-ass everything while taking on the occasional odd, overpriced commission to supplement his minimum wage income.

I can't read what those tweets say but I just spent like a solid five minutes engaged in very confusing, very uncomfortable eye contact with that bear
The point isn't what the messages say, it's that my entire fucking twitter feed is this asshole going on about shit nobody cares about. I had to zoom my browser out to like 30% to capture all the shit in one screenshot.

I'm wondering if Dobson is one to those people who like to hear themselves talk IRL.

So like most amateur dA artists who think they're "all that and a bag of chips" then.

But in all seriousness, It's possible he might have developed a love/hate relationship. And the love side is totally oblivious to the critiques that the hate side has to tell them "I dun' need improvement" and rant on about feminist shit.

I actually saw that image below and initially mistook it for the original thinking "oh, it's not THAT bad"
Then I actually looked properly.
A+ Crit and correction! (if anything, it's the kinda crits I could do with!)
Though I might take a crack at doing a better pose for Alex(?) there. It just looks so stiff... also revealing considering the "context"

Wow, what a fucking arsehole. It doesn't matter if it's old, that might still have some legitimate points. Heck, why not something like "Well it WAS seven years ago, I think I've improved since then!" it's still shutting down crits (lord knows dobsonbear cannot handle crits) and yet it sounds far less arsey.

I didn't want to do something that would require time but fuck it, I think I'll grab something recent (like that creepy avatar) and redraw it in colour just for spite's sake. I may not have a lot of faith in myself but I can probably do better!

EDIT: In fact, I went and did just that. Less than an hour, not much above 30 minutes and I even gave myself some of the same restrictions as the original (just head, pure black lines, plain background, the horrid design's colour scheme)
