Complaining about "how devastating it can be" to have your publicly posted work criticized by members of the public? Seriously?

I wonder how he got through art school at all if he is that thin-skinned.

I think that the sheer volume and visibility of the critique is what he's referring to. A lot of it, especially when generated by the Internet at large, can be really harsh and unproductive (i.e. just ranting or insulting) as opposed to like, a formal art academy.

What really intrigues me is how this differs from the success of other artists. Surely mainstream comicbook authors get tons of shit, right? What makes Dobson a target? I'm trying to think of a way really explain what went wrong for him.

What went wrong is that he's a terrible artist and and egotistical whackjob who masquerades as a "Feminist" to get that delicious pussy while simultaneously hating all men.

He actually had almost decent works during his college years, so maybe that's why he passed. He seems allergic to concrit, only craves asspats from deviantartlets, and "I'M GONNA IMPROVE AT MY OWN PAAAAAAAAAACE" is what's making his art regress. Also, his constant need to spout his opinion on whatever on the internet spotlight instead of working to improve his art might be a factor too. Really, he's supposed to be "on break" from the internet, but he just CAN'T SHUT THE FUCK UP. He's basically just riding whatever is on the popular bandwagon to make people pay attention to him.

Maybe he had nice classmates. In all of the art and writing classes I've had criticism had to be accompanied by compliments. But because no one wants to be seen as a bitch/bastard/total asshole with this rule most of my classmates were uncomfortable with criticism (no matter how constructive) and some of them would flat out omit it. So if only the teachers and a handful of students "dared" to criticize him it might've been bearable enough for him to keep his butthurt levels low enough to not ragequit out of school.

I haven't been following the whole Dobson saga too closely, but my impression is that it's mostly about his preachiness. If you want to lecture people – in any medium, not just art – and get away with it, you either need to possess incredible charm, superhuman amounts of talent, or an impregnably thick skin. Preferably all of the above, but the thick skin is probably the most important one, and the one where he fails the hardest.

People hate being preached to. The ones who disagree with you will give you shit in any case, but if you don't have the charm and talent to pull it off gracefully, you can easily piss off people who don't have an opinion on the issue in question as well, or even the ones who are inclined to agree with you, just because they feel patronized and talked down to. Either way, you'll end up with a lot of flak coming your way. That's where the thick skin comes into play. People realised that they could get a rise out of him by criticising or sometimes even just nitpicking his art, and that's where things seem to have started to go downhill for good.

But as I said, that's just my two cents as someone who's only followed him cursorily.

Oho, man. That "AHM LEAVING THE INTERNET" break that everyone tries to pull out if they're immature and want to drift things their way, when in short they want to feed their ego with sweet, sweet attention.

On the subject of women in gaming, there's a really fantastic woman in the industry right now called Amy Henning. She's been around since the 90s and has worked on notable games such as Legacy of Kain, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted, and has been called one of the most influential women in gaming. Funny how people like Tom, who claim to be feminists, never seem to mention her contributions to the art form.

There's all sorts of women in the industry. Just CTRL+F "she" in this page:

To say that women aren't doing anything in the industry is an extremely myopic observation to the point of misogyny itself. It's like the people that say porn oppresses women when we have people like Jude that runs the YouPorn twitter account.

Interestingly, btw, YouPorn is sponsoring a Dota 2 E-sports team: https://twitter.com/tgnTV/status/503179896240099328

Probably the single most oppressive thing I've ever seen, I mean -- I just -- I can't even

I really don't understand Dobson's issue with porn. Apart from the obvious hypocrisy *cough* I find absolutely nothing wrong with the way women are portrayed in porn, in general. I'm sure there are specific examples that cross the line but, as someone who is pretty into yaoi, I've seen plenty of drawings of men who get degraded for the purposes of titillation just as much as the opposite sex.

Just to show I can play devil's advocate, there is an issue of context here. For centuries women have been treated as commodities. In some parts of the world they still are commodities. For that reason I can see why the treatment of women in porn is a sore subject. However, I highly doubt that criticizing pornography in the western world is going to have any effect on how poorly women are treated in other parts of the world.

Furthermore, porn is porn. It doesn't exist to prop up human rights. Some people want to fap to something that will make them feel ashamed afterwards. And even if you get off to women being beaten and raped in porn, that doesn't mean you're going to abuse a woman in real life. It's as if people like Dobson have never heard of BDSM. Even then, I could understand if he was bothered by this. I could understand if he was disturbed by people who are into rape porn and guro.

But no, he's upset because he can see Samus' thighs and tum tum. Heavens to Betsy!

It's much simpler: porn show people having sex. Tommy's not having any and it frustrates him. But saying that out loud would hurt his precious oversized ego, so he goes the human rights route, fishing for sympathy.

Probably a little bit different. I think he believes this route will get him in bed with some SJW grills.

Sorry to change the subject, but I really have to talk about this Jade character I've been seeing in Tom's comics. I don't actively follow him but I do have a dA account and his comics pop up occasionally as I browse.

Jade is the one with the pink hair. Look at her. JUST. LOOK. She's got a peanut shaped head, Mr. Burns' nose, and a chin to rival Jay Leno. Her hair is bright and wild but her clothes are drab and boring. What the hell is she supposed to be?

And getting back to the nose, did you guys know that thing gets longer every time Dobson draws her? Her she is in her first appearance:

great-expectations.jpg

HER NOSE IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I swear to god you can go to the archives on syac.com and watch it enlarge by the panel. If her nose suddenly got longer, I could accept that he just decided to change her design, but it doesn't. It's like he didn't even bother to make a reference sheet for this character.

EDIT: And now that I'm examining the above panels more closely I'm noticing so many more mistakes. Jesus Christ that door. Jesus Christ Emily's glasses.

Here's the archive. It looks like the first strip was posted in late 2012. The strip where Emily is complaining about being tired was posted a couple of weeks ago.

The nerdy girl is Emily. It's weird. I do actually like Emily's design. She's cute, awkward, and her design is coherent. Even Jade's initial design looks pretty good. Unfortunately she changes her appearance after the first five strips and her nose starts growing like Pinocchio immediately after the first strip.

The BIGGEST THING that sticks out to me is this fucking bush.

this bush.png

This bush doesn't need to be. It doesn't have a reason to exist outside of being there to make the picture look nice. But that's why it should exist. He totally went fucking Bob Ross and added a happy little bush out of a happy little accident. He never does this anymore and I don't understand why.

Look at the newer comic. There's nothing extra. No posters on the wall, no paintings, no lamps, no side tables, not a fucking thing. The entire scene is so devoid of character and what is there lacks the attention to detail this fucking bush had 2 years ago. Look at how there's 4 different kinds of greens and they're all shaded and it looks like he spent time getting it to be the best bush he could draw. That sofa didn't get this attention. There's no stains or shading or cushions. No little buttons that bevel the surface. No flourishes or accents. 1 solid color for the fill, 1 solid color for the line. 1 sofa. Nothing else.
