Opinion American Airlines policy allowing BLM pins faces backlash from workers

Article (Archived)

There’s pin-demonium brewing at American Airlines. Top brass at the nation’s largest commercial jet carrier is facing turbulence from within after it announced that flight attendants are now allowed to wear Black Lives Matter pins on their uniforms while on duty. The move has irked some of American’s white New York staffers, including those who have spouses or relatives who are cops — because they consider the BLM movement divisive and anti-police, saying it promotes or condones violence.

“I take offense to this,” one veteran flight attendant said in an email to airline management obtained by The Post. “Serious offense. My husband is a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer), as was my deceased father and as far as I’m concerned ALL LIVES MATTER.”

“I am completely disgusted at the fact that we can’t show support for our GOD, our COUNTRY, our LEOs but when it comes to BLM organization (which is controversial in itself), American Airlines says that’s obviously different,” she wrote. “And we can. How is that right? Well, I don’t feel included.”

Another flight attendant who asked to be identified only as John said staffers who refuse to wear the pin will now “be ostracized and labeled as racist,” and described BLM as “a terrorist organization that promotes violence to further their agenda.”

“If this pin is sanctioned I will wear my NYPD pin supporting the police department,” he said.

A top official at the airline defended the decision, saying she had been “taken aback” by “widespread” complaints from black AA workers about “implicit bias and direct racism from customers and other team members.”

"American is truly committed to having an inclusive culture that is welcoming to all and a reflection of our country and world,” Jill Surked, the airline’s senior vice president for flight services said in an email response to ticked off workers.

“One symbolic way to show our support is through a uniform pin,” she said. “We are working with our Black Professional Network on designing a specific pin that may be worn with the uniform. In the interim until this pin is produced, to recognize the significance of this moment in history, we are allowing people to wear a Black Lives Matter Pin.”

In a statement to The Post Sunday, the airline said the company has employee “resource groups” working on several pin designs for various causes, including charitable groups that include UNICEF and others.

“Our Christian, veterans and LGBTQ groups, for example, have developed their own pin that can be worn as part of the uniform,” the statement said.

American said it views the BLM pin push “not as a political cause but as a universal cause about humanity and equality. Fundamentally, Black Lives Matter is an expression of equality.”

“It doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter, rather that in our society black lives should matter and be valued the same as others. That’s not political.”

But angry airline employees accused American of jumping on the Black Live Matter bandwagon to keep up with rival Delta Airlines, which reportedly has designed its own BLM pin for its flight attendants to wear.

AA recently announced it was laying off 19,000 workers because of the coronavirus-fueled recession that crippled the travel business. BLM protests have been held across the country since the May 25 police custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and subsequent incidents of black people killed or injured in clashes with police. Floyd died after a white police officer had his knee on Floyd’s back for eight minutes.

Here's another thing. I would be fine with this instance of corporate virtue signalling if it made any fucking difference to the black people who can't afford a plane ticket to begin with.

Also, if all lives matter and back the blue pins were also in the works. 30'000 feet up is really not the best place to have a forum on race relations anyways. You're probably already packed like a sardine, wondering about your luggage and possibly facing jet lag, so why even bring up politics in that environment?

I find it very, very strange that - worldwide - even in countries without the nigger virus, BLM is being pushed. It makes no sense.
So, how are Antifa/BLM/etc threatening these corps? Because it's very obvious there is something going on.

It's just Big Brother, it's a way to control people, that's why it's popular worldwide.

Totally unacceptable. Nothing that can even feasibly be used as a weapon should be brought on a plane, especially in this volatile day and age. Feels shouldn't trump safety. I can just picture it now. Some troon lowering their mask for a brief moment by the loos whilst a BLM deathfat rampages at them with the glinting end of a pin.

Actually...maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

And that BLM more than the Yazidi who are being slaughtered in the Middle East by ISIS, or Muslims in China...

Nobody cares about these groups though do they?

I thought our country was a racist white supremacist patriarchy that groups like BLM wanted to change?

Lol my job banned hats at the job cause some guy wore a MAGA hat, don't say anything to the managers with BLM stuff on their badges though.

When will corporations and sports leagues finally get the message that political buttons, shirts, signs, etc. are not welcome, no matter what the message is?

Will they allow workers to wear MAGA hats? Of course not. This fascist BLM takeover of all public spaces is really becoming fucking annoying, and it needs to stop. Even black people are growing sick of it.
Honestly I'm surprised that black people aren't more pissed off about white leftists using their name for shitty politics.

A theory I've seen, which I believe to be more likely than not, is that there is a credible threat related to government, corporate and financial electronic systems was levied by some collective associated with Antifa/Anarchists etc.
I think it's more that many people in both media and silicon valley social media companies are turbo-woke and this scares both politicians and big corporations. We see mass media report things that aren't true or heavily twisted and politicians and corps knows that not toeing the line means they will be put on the shit list, get everything they do or say twisted around so media can try to rile people up to destroy them. As opposed to singing their praises if they go along with it. So Nike puts out a meaningless PR statement and toss some loose change their way to be left alone, politicians like Biden say that black lives matter while ghosting the people from the organization itself.

This is all largely about kissing the ring of woke media/soc-media, not BLM, they don't really have to deal with the BLM org itself because media will give them a pass if they just virtue signal about it instead.
