I’m going to go against the popular opinion and say she might actually need the money. If she’s on Medicare, not Medicaid, there are actually a lot of costs you have to cover. If she is on ssdi, which I believe she would qualify for, she would have Medicare. If she is on ssi, she would have Medicaid. This could vary by state, but I doubt it.
First, Medicare isn’t free. You pay for it, even if you are on social security disability. Usually around $150/month, maybe more or less depending on which plans you have, and it comes out of your ssdi payment.
Then there are copays, and whatever Medicare doesn’t cover. I have never handled anything cancer related like chemo so I can’t say for sure how much is covered but I would be very surprised if it was totally covered.
Many places will let you make monthly payments of maybe $25 but usually more like $50, or give a 20% discount on the total bill.
