That's been my experience as well. I think the reality is that they're hugely popular and everywhere, and confirmation bias is a hell of a drug.

Many, many a year ago when I had the tamagotchi-sort of one that came with the Pokemon games at the time I cheesed the fuck out of it (and boosted the hell out of my Pokemon's gains, bruh) by just holding it in my hand and shaking it up and down. Although that was a video game add-on and probably not as high tech or sensitive as a real pedometer or activity tracker like Garmin or fitbit. I doubt you can game the system with those things by just shaking them or throwing them in the washing machine.
