I'm not sure I buy that unless it is like a 600lb life/Dr.Now situation...she stands a greater chance of dying under anesthesia than surviving the surgery due to obesity.

yeah i know, she was one of the ''pioneers'' in the autistic and disability community, now granted she does make a good point about the functional labels because first off, no one can truly agree on what makes a person truly highly functional, or low... and what about the mid range ??? no one ever looks at those folks that are some where in the middle which is actually where a lot of the so called highly capable ones actually are.... and if you look at all their deficits and areas they struggle, or are yes, disabled, they are not highly capable.... and often times, the so called lower level folks WITH THE RIGHT TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIALS, ECT, they can be more capable and do more and show more skills and intelligence. and like i said again, quite many of the ones called highly functional simply because they are somewhat verbal...or hvea few skills, if they look at all areas, may times they are not all that highly capable. and i seen it more times than i care to count--- a person who is labled as highly functional...often times does NOT get the assistance, accommodations, supports they need in the areas they are not '' high functional ''' in and they often fail and end up under achieving, folks deemed low, are often not given the chances, and the expectations are low..... so yes that actually made a lot of sense, but the fact that they tout themselves around---well mostly amanda touted herself as a disabled person, instead of getting an education and using her skills and becoming an amazing social worker and ally advocate---- she could have seriously made real changes and differences in the disabled communities a nd the social services world, but no, she needed to become a complete train-wreck :/

I got to thinking earlier about Amanda's "advocacy" and some of the valid points she made about people with developmental disabilities. While the points may be valid, they're actually from a kind of self-centered point of view if you look at them.

For example, she constantly attacked the idea of functioning labels in autism. Yes, such labels can be misleading and are not as cut-and-dried as some clinicians may think, but they're not always wholly invalid either. I don't think Amanda was against the labels so much because they led to people stereotyping the autistic community, but because there was enough truth to them that if people really studied them, they'd quickly see that Amanda doesn't fit the criteria for autism or cognitive disability. If she can argue that it's all junk science and get people on her side, she's in the clear. It's like how the fat acceptance bitches cherry-pick which scientific "facts" support their contention that 450lbs. is a healthy weight while conveniently discarding the actual evidence that tells them they're unhealthy. And we know from Amanda's post about fat people and feeding tubes that she's no stranger to Fat Logic™ either.

I think the fact Amanda started using the internet when she was very young is one of the biggest contribution factors in her absurd behavior. She learned about anonymity, about how people can be gullible and believe in anything they see on the internet, and for sure, she read about mental illness and autism online. She then put two and two together and realized how easy it would be to fake having an ''invisible'' mental illness like autism. As people have said, at the time she started with the fake bullshit, autism was little understood and people would %100 believe a fat girl with crossed eyes screaming blood murder and flapping around would be autistic without a second thought.

But then autism got ''mainstream'' and a lot of doctors and therapists knew what was up with it. So her facade began to crack more and more with each day. Which left her desperate and doing everything in her hands to be relevant again, til she died from probably some kind of complication from one of her many ''medical procedures''.

That would be tragic if she wasn't such an egoistic evil person.
