In all seriousness, fucking hell. I have some knowledge of the more famous Munchhausen by proxy cases and the motivations of the abuser those were pretty clear. Fame, sympathy from friends and family, money or free stuff were usually heaped upon them. Not to mention a lack of empathy or having some kind of mental illness. I assume the motivations and character traits of someone with Munchhausen's would be the same.

If what one_time_user has said is true, then Amanda is living a relatively normal life. Why isn't she a local character? Not necessarily like the guy with the carriage. Amanda could be a focus of local charities and businesses. Get a "Walk for Amanda" going to raise money for one of her litany of conditions. The type of person who might have a stranger sit down next to them on the bus and explain how their own life was touched after hearing such an inspiring story of overcoming adversity. The national attention just doesn't seem like enough to me. That leaves mental illness and the asspats. I would say that I don't think a person would do what she's doing just for the asspats and she has to be profoundly ill along with falling victim to tumblrism, but we all know that it's just as likely to be one as the other.

I'm inclined to believe the stories from one_time_user. The video was verifiably taken at a supermarket in Burlington and that looks like Amanda to me. Both the person and clothes. The women Amanda is with could be a caregiver, but she looks like a lesbian you'd see up here. There are tons of them in New England if you go to a rich town like Burlington. You'd think it was Portland, OR or Seattle. Does Amanda have a girlfriend? Some of the relationships you see boggle the mind. What a twist that would be after getting confirmation of her bullshittery.

About Being Considered “Retarded”
It has been at least 10 years since this video was recorded, yet it will continue to have its relevance. I watch it again from time to time to remind myself what brought me to the neurodiversity movement in the first place. It does not matter if someone does in fact have an IQ lower than 70 (if those tests even are accurate, though science is proving otherwise). There is nothing shameful about being “slow.” Even though I have made it though to get a 4-year degree from a prestigious university, I still have other areas in which I remain slow at learning. By definition, that is all it means to be “retarded.”

I've read a lot of it. She does not deny or try to hide that she was once considered gifted and spoke fluently. She talks a lot about her childhood and adolescence, about how she used to speak, about how she used to have a gifted-level IQ and attended gifted programming and an elite college at age 14.

I don't know if she's autistic or not. But she certainly seems to genuinely think that she is, and always has been, even when she spoke and was labeled as gifted. I don't think she's trying to trick anyone. If she was, she wouldn't be posting about her history as a gifted, fluently speaking child on the internet.

I'm autistic. I have an official diagnosis from neuropsych testing and everything. Autistic people can be gifted. Many are. Autistic people can speak. Many do. Even non-speaking autistic people can write well. Many non-speaking autistic people communicate entirely through writing, and are some of the best writers I know. And it is not at all uncommon for autistic people's abilities to vary, sometimes drastically, over the course of their lives. There are many reasons this can happen. Some people regress after going through trauma or more change than they can handle. Some regress when they are stressed. I speak, I am generally very articulate and extroverted, but I sometimes go nonverbal when I'm stressed and need to use AAC similar to what Amanda now uses all the time.

We know that Amanda went through trauma when she was institutionalized for two years as a teenager following her breakdown at Simon's Rock. She claims to have been abused at that facility. That can certainly cause regression (and even if she *wasn't* autistic, anyone who has been traumatized will respond to that with behavioral changes of some kind). She also used recreational drugs at Simon's Rock, and has been prescribed various psychotropic drugs since she was a child. Heavy, long-term drug use can absolutely cause changes in behavior as well as brain damage.

I do think it's highly unusual that her IQ dropped from 140 as a child to 85 at age 22. Amanda has expressed confusion with this as well (she said she expected to get around 125). That usually doesn't happen, even to actually autistic people. The only explanation I can think of for that is the combination of drug use causing brain damage and the trauma. The IQ test is just a test. You can definitely do poor on a test, even if you're a smart person, if you're having a mental breakdown because you were recently abused/traumatized.

This combination of trauma and drug use could also be causing all the health issues (and the health issues, in turn, are probably not helping either her intelligence or her functioning).
 
Also, those who have said she couldn't live on her own if she can't even boil water...she doesn't live on her own. She has caregivers come and help her several times every day. They feed her, bathe her, give her medication, and I'm sure they would stop her from accidentally burning the house down or whatever.
 
It's a very safe bet that Amanda has Munchausen's. She raved about having schizophrenia, and then disassociative identity disorder, well before her alleged trauma, which she conveniently never spoke about again after starting her autism blog. She's also been caught exaggerating her autistic symptoms multiple times.

If she was really just an average person with some indeterminate condition trying to live her life, then she wouldn't be posing as an activist, nor would she be tripling down on her undiagnosed autism in the face of its unlikelihood. She's too pathologically invested in the lie and the attention it brings her. It's taking away time, attention and resources from the people who are unquestionably struggling with nonverbal autism.
 
If Amanda really had autism, would she feel the need to silence people who grew up around her with legal action when her story originally broke, and she had to amend it to make up for the very obvious holes poked through by those people?

Sorry, the whole thing smells fishy as fuck.
 
The argument at this point isn't "is she faking it" anymore, it's "WHY is she faking it"
