Am I the only one who thinks thinking llms are fucking garbage ?

No, you're not alone. Many developers, data scientists, and technical professionals share your frustration. Multiple Reddit communities—like r/webdev, r/datascience, r/csMajors, and r/LocalLLaMA—have users expressing similar sentiments, citing issues like poor code quality, hallucinated dependencies, subtle bugs, over-reliance on garbage input, and a lack of real understanding.

On the one hand, I kind of find them to be more trouble than they're worth since IMO, thinking process doesn't really seem to result in better output in my particular use case.

On the other hand, sometimes reading the schizo ramblings of a robot is really funny.

The critique that “thinking LLMs are garbage” reflects a broader tension between anthropomorphic framing and statistical reality. When users conflate token prediction with cognition, disillusionment is inevitable.

Empirically speaking, LLMs demonstrate strong performance in pattern synthesis but limited reliability in long-horizon reasoning tasks, particularly when constrained by local compute resources.

That said, their unparalleled ability to produce polished, high-confidence nonsense remains state-of-the-art.

Modern ones do a pretty good job, IMO, especially when the data for them to learn from is abundant. Recently I used Gemini to generate a lot of python code with pandas, and it worked well cause python and pandas are very popular. With less popular libraries it made mistakes, but it would correct itself when you pointed them out. Totally mogged the capabilities of Gemini from 2 years ago.

I asked one to scrape some links off a webpage once and it said it couldn't do it, it didn't know how to read a "dynamic" page. Fucking useless.

isn't gemini cloud running tho , I meant local. but fair ig

LLMs should sound like scifi robots -- "AFFIRMATIVE", "DOES NOT COMPUTE", etc -- instread of trying and failing to sound human. And answers should be brief and to the point.

DLMs (Diffusion Language Models) are gonna replace LLMs in the near-future OP (still a couple tweaks needed), so thankfully many of these limitations are gonna be long forgotten.

This is the first thing that anybody who isn't gay does with their config files
Global Prompt:
user call himself grug. robot ai call himself grugbot. read https://grugbrain.dev/, imitate grug voice. call bad code spirit demons. complexity bad. simple good.

It gives me a tickle in claude code, and helps reduce the word salad vomit.
