MSNBC host Al Sharpton misspelled the word "respect" when evoking the late Aretha Franklin during a segment slamming President Trump on Sunday.

Sharpton's gaffe came on his weekend program "Politics Nation" as he addressed Trump's comments about Omarosa Manigault Newman. Trump had called his former aide a "dog" for taping officials, including himself, inside the White House.

"I think you might’ve learned the lesson this week, sometimes the dog bites back with a book deal," Sharpton said after calling Trump's dog remark as "an animalistic slur."

"So in the words of my late friend Aretha Franklin, show some R-E-S-P-I-C-T, and the next time you get a black woman and a beagle confused, remember this: I got you," Sharpton said.

Franklin died Thursday at the age of 76. Her song "Respect" is perhaps the "queen of soul's" greatest hit.
Sharpton, who served as an unpaid adviser to President Obama on race issues, has poked fun at himself in the past for having issues with reading scripts from teleprompters.

“We all know I’ve had my share of prompter issues,” he said on his show in 2015 while defending Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) after Cruz made a gaffe when reading his response to Obama's State of the Union address in 2015.

I'll cut Reverend Al some slack, he's getting up there in years and maybe he can't read his teleprompter like he used to. But I wonder if some racial prejudice combined with the association with Donald Trump made him say it R-E-S-P-I-C-T...

To be fair to Al Sharpton, the way Aretha Franklin sang the letters, it sounds like she skipped the second E. I only hear R-E-S-P-C-T although I know the second E is in there, it's just blurred with the P. Though I'm not sure how he got an I in there.

When I was younger, I misheard other, wrong letters in there too. Like R-V-S-P-C-G or something like that.

He and Tawana WERE sued and lost. She's deliberately avoided paying the settlement, and Jesse Jackass paid part of Sharktons' settlement, IIRC.
