Disaster Air Canada fined for not using enough French - SPEAK ENGLISH DAMMIT.

Air Canada has been ordered to pay a French-speaking couple 21,000 Canadian dollars ($15,700; £12,900) and write them a letter of apology for violating their linguistic rights.

The couple complained that some signs on a domestic flight they took were only in English, while others gave the French version less prominence.

A judge ruled that the airline had breached Canada's bilingualism laws.

Air Canada reportedly told the court it would work to replace the signs.

Ontario couple Michel and Lynda Thibodeau filed 22 complaints against the airline in 2016.

Among them, they argued that the word "lift" was engraved on the buckles of their seatbelts in English but not in French, while French translations of words such as "exit" were in smaller characters.

They also said the English-language boarding announcement for their Montreal-bound flight was more thorough than the French version.

"Air Canada systematically violates the linguistic rights of Francophones," the couple argued, according to the written judgment for the case.

In the ruling, the Ottawa court judge agreed that the airline had "not upheld its linguistic obligations".

Air Canada is subject to the country's Official Languages Act, which seeks to ensure that English and French are given equal status.

The airline had argued that the couple was interpreting the act too strictly, according to the court documents.

In an interview with Canadian broadcaster CBC, Mr Thibodeau said he was satisfied with the judgement but hoped to see signs on Air Canada flights improve in the future.

"Signage must be of equal quality," he said. "My expectation is that within a couple of months, we will be able to fly on any Air Canada plane, and finally signage will be in both official languages."

It is not the first time the couple have accused the airline of violating their linguistic rights. In 2014, the Supreme Court ruled that they could not sue Air Canada over a mistaken drink order on an international flight and would have to settle for an apology, the Toronto Sun reported.

Quebec needs to get their heads out their arses.

22 fuckin complaints which essentially amount to not having frog words on objects that dont need any words on them to begin with. Do you really need to be told how to operate a seatbelt or where the fuckin exit on a plane is? You cant figure this shit out on your own?

lmfao so either these guys just got a tidy sum for being stupid or this might be among the griftiest grifts whatever did grift.

I can guarantee that both of these assholes speak impeccable English and are only doing this for the payout. I doubt that there are very many unilingual French speakers in this entire country, let alone living in Ontario.

Fuck the Francophones.

From my experience working in Quebec, in bigger cities like Montreal, Quebec City, and Trois-Rivieres, most people can understand and speak English, they just hate doing it and will pretend not to understand it just to be assholes. But in places way out in the boondocks like Val D'or, Saguenay, and Rimouski, nobody bothers to even learn any English. Rural Quebecers also have terrible diets of nothing but beer, poutine, A&W hamburgers and tarte au sucre, and are really inbred.

Yeah, I guess I meant 'unilingual French speakers who can afford to get on an airplane'.

In Quebec, the language police literally runs around with measuring tapes to make sure that the French part of a bilingual sign is at least twice as big as the English part, and more prominent. Also, they banned the word 'email' as being 'too English', you have to call it a 'carrielle'.

I love it when you go across the St. Lawrence river from Montreal to Kahnawake, the Mohawk reservation, and everything's only in English. That's where everyone in Montreal goes to buy cigarettes, because otherwise they're $25 a pack.
I heard that a chinese restaurant got in trouble for having the chinese written name of the store larger than the French.
Not sure if that's true but I believe it.
They're just mad because France doesn't want them.

Eastern Canada was a mistake.

Everything beyond Quebec is great though when you pretend natives don't exist.

These kinds of Canadian language parity laws (protecting French) have existed for quite a while. I remember reading about them in the early 00's.
Canada's great. You can go to any public tour in a big city like Toronto and speak in English the whole time, and the minute you ask them something like "en français?" they are required to repeat themselves in Frog.

They have the right idea, get payouts from the government to get smashed all day.

Protecting your culture is very important.

Unless you're white and, apparently, not French.

The First Amendment is as much about curtailing government suppression as it is curtailing the ability for bored busybodies to be a legal nuiscance.... even at it's most litigious, no American court would never allow this garbage to clog it's halls.

The problem with all the empowering that's been going on, socially, for the last 30 years is that it all sounded good when passed, but ultimately was used as a tool by proffesional nuisances and grifters to be nuisances and sue you for hurt feelings.

Frogs are only white on the outside. Look at their history of murderous republics alternating with murderous dictatorships and tell me they'd be out of place in the Congo basin.

It's like how English Canada is really only bilingual (with French) around the borders of Quebec, i.e. parts of Northern and Eastern Ontario and Northern and Eastern New Brunswick, with only a smattering of French enclaves that are mostly dead elsewhere.

There's nothing wrong with bilingualism or have a bilingual policy. The problem is that Canada's federal bilingualism policy is most ungrounded in reality that ignores the essentially unilingual nature of the two portions of the country, instead manidating that the federal government bilingual everywhere, instead just in areas where it is actually needed.

I have in laws from rual Quebec. All they want to do is hunt, drink and fuck. They are all retarded. Val D'Or is a special circle of hell.

Thing is, it's NOT "language equality", even though it pays lip service to it. Quebec passed Bill 101 in 1977, which made French the exclusive normal and everyday language of work, instruction, communication, commerce, and business in the Province. Any immigrants MUST have their kids go to school in French, not English (although English is taught as a half-assed second language, much like French is in the rest of the country). There is severe restriction on who can attend an Anglophone school. Then there's the whole signage bullshit where yes, a Chinese business was indeed fined for having their Chinese characters on their signs larger than the french. All French signs must be larger than any signs in ANY other language including English.

It's called "The Language Police" for a reason, as the overseeing Office quebecois de la langue francaise once cited an Italian Restaurant in 2013 for having "pasta", "antipasti" "calamari" and so forth printed on its menus instead of French equivalents. They also wanted people to start calling steak "bifteck"even though the francophones in Quebec use the word "steak" more often than bifteck.

Why is all this stuff gotten away with? Well, because the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms has an out known as "The Notwithstanding Clause" which is basically a "Fuck you" to the Federal Government AND the Supreme Court when it's invoked. Add to that the fact that Quebec is a treasure trove of votes that can, and WILL, be pandered to by the Liberals and even the Conservatives so people can win a frigging election.
