Age of Wonders - the chad of 4x autism

Bump, just downloaded AoW4.
It's a fun 4x and I definitely recommend it.
I also like the devs because they actually listen to feedback and improve on the game based on player feedback.
Also try giving the Story Realms (campaign) a try. I believe it's better to start there, before going into the sandbox experience.

And finally, if you wish, post your custom factions, so we can get the thread more active.

I both love and hate Age of Wonders 4 multiplayer experience. Its fun and accessible to play with friends, but what really sucks is that you have to play using their servers. My experience is playing with 1-3 additional players.
A lot od times you can get desynced (which is not that bad) or get your MP game bricked due to crash (which crashes again after rejoining).
I've read thats the issue due to server overload, but i can't confirm it. We experienced this with both simultanous and classic turns - it still happens the same. More people in game increases the chance.
Fun fact - if you use pirate version of the game then it still uses their servers.

DLCs are pretty cool for singleplayer. I half suspect that they can fuck up your multiplayer game due to new mechanics, but thats just my theory.

I strongly recommend playing multiplayer without any DLCs. Every new one feels like a total powercreep, instead of giving you new options. I also recommend banning "chosen destroyers" pantheon unlock culture thing. This stuff helped me totally dominate the game and bonus from it consisted 60-70% of my economy/science in the endgame.

I am not sure about it, but I suspect that the game is prone to desync more in the simultanous turns than classic.

This keeps getting suggested to me as someone who liked Civ2's Test of Time (which had weird fantasy / scifi versions of Civ2 with multiple overlayed maps) and Stellaris (where you can customize each level of your faction).

I see they're already up to $150 in DLC and a third "season" pass. On the other hand, I see Spiffing Brit has already done a few vids highlighting how lolbroken you can go with the customization.

How's it holding up? Have they descended into cash grab DLCs yet?

It's solid 5/10.
DLC are alright when it comes to content, but the game itself is bloated and unfocused. If anything - this game needs less content but with more impact (e.g. less spells but with better stronger effects).
City economy is fucked, diplomacy is terrible, game balance is shit (in a bad way), combat is alright and customisation is great.
You better get a gog version from rutracker if you really want to try it.

P. s. Planetfall holds better imho. But it lacks customisation.

I'd recommend Age of Wonders 3 instead, tbh. It's a tighter version of what we have in 4, without the grey goo that is races that can be anything and anyone.

Cash grab DLC is subjective in my opinion.
If you like the game, if you want more content, if the devs aren't scum and the prices aren't ridiculous, then it should not be a problem.
I personally own all content and I enjoy playing the game.
Pirate it, try it, make up your own mind, but I like the dev team and will patronise them in the future.

I also like Planetfall more, but it's because of the sci-fi setting and all the tropes involved (Starship troopers, Borg, Dune etc).
With that out of the way, I disagree with everything else you've said, but I don't care enough to argue, since it's just personal preference.

AoW3 is dated.
You say grey goo, but I say endless customization. With the new advanced settings, where you path tomes, fighting against custom rulers you made yourself is incredibly fun.
A race can be anything and anyone, treu, but no two races are the same. Unless you lack imagination.

Planetfall and 4 are dog shit, play the originals newfags.
Aow 1? I mean, it's charming in its simplicity, but every fight is solved by an over leveled hero. It is also funny to complete a giant campaign map on a second turn by randomly meeting and killing an enemy leader.
But still - will not recommend, it gets boring.
