Adventure Time/Fionna and Cake

I miss when Adventure Time was about saving colorful kingdoms and fighting evil liches, an insane ice king or some business guys frozen in ice or something, what the fuck are these dime a dozen "vaguely chubby white millennial girl with bpd has a quiiirky love life" clips I keep seeing on Twitter?
I guess I was smart for refusing to engage with the first season outside of the one "everyone's dead" episode and the clips of Simon I could find, because it was already annoying enough back in late AT where they had to make every other character secretly a reincarnation of some cosmic god or something (which even extends to here, where it went from Ice King's weird fanfiction to some rogue universe that was actually made by Prismo) while showing active disdain for the 2 main protagonists, but every clip involving this version of Fionna just felt like Quirk Chungus skinwalking the IP.

Modern animation today doubles as both of a voice for the the 30+ year old writer's stunted development issue and fetish fuel for vaguely aged characters.

>Season 2 is gonna pick up at episode 3 they're just setting up
>Season 2 is gonna pick up at episode 4 they're just setting up
>Season 2 is gonna pick up at episode 5 they're just setting up

>Season 2 is gonna pick up at the final
at this point the only enjoyment is get from this show is the novelty of "hey it's that character but a different gender", god knows nothing else is happening

Also they made Huntress Wizard an autistic bitch who's an asshole to everyone trying to help her it makes her really unlikable

"I am going to have sex with this female Fire Elemental from the Fire Kingdom"

I remember dropping AT way back in 2014 halfway through the Breezy episode thinking something like "this is fucking shit lmao", which apparently was a good decision because from what I've heard it didn't get much better.

So if the gender-bent version of Huntress Wizard — Hunter — is an FtM trans man, then it means Huntress Wizard was originally born male.

All characters are gender-bent in the Fionna and Cake universe. Unless for some reason she’s the only cosmic exception? Yikes, they didn’t just cuck Finn, they also paired my man with a dude. Jesus. Finn. What did they do to you?"

Finn didn't stand a chance the moment the progressive ideologues starting going full force with making the show lame and gay. The blonde haired white kid hero going on adventures, chasing after girls and protecting the weak was clearly a bad influence on the young boys of the world that had to be taken down a couple pegs. It was practically a moral imperative for them to turn Finn into a literal cucked pervert faggot.

I think Huntress Wizard is safe from the trans allegations. Farmworld Finn's late wife is clearly that universe's HW, and having a real woman voice a trans woman would be ~transphobic~

Plus, Huntress Wizard clearly is a transphobe herself:

Huntress wizard probably doesn't have genitals because she's a plant creature, there's not really another way to translate that into a non-magic human world that doesn't turn her into a literal plant other than being trans/non-binary/whatever hunter is.

People who think Hunter being a tranny makes Huntress Wizard a tranny are thinking about the rules with real life logic. This is made by kool-aid drinking Commiefornians.
The showrunners think trannies are heckin' valid, so a character identifying as the opposite gender counts to them as fitting into the genderswap AU. It's fucking stupid, but it's that simple. There is no twist and the original HW isn't a tranny - they just think making her AU version a tranny is an extraneous detail and doesn't break the genderswap rules.

I get physically ill when I see Marshall and Gumball together, most gay shit doesn't phase me anymore but they are different. Marshall is also a little fucking bitch whose feelings are always getting hurt by the smallest shit and Gumball is an even littler bitch who enables it. His mom isn't even mean to him, he just whines when he doesn't get his way. I guess he's an accurate spoiled rich kid in that way. If he was the emo white boy he originally was I probably would have been slightly less repulsed. This is my fault for watching this show, thoughbeit.

The fact they had to bring Huntress Wizard in S2 kind of feels like an admission that Fionna and Cake cannot hold a narrative on their own, so they had to bring a lot of stuff from Adventure Time, to the point this feels like a minor sequel to it than something that stands on its own. People just want more of Finn and the OG cast.

I see some people unironically saying H.W should have been the focus at the start.

I dont like most of the human cast so her being mean to them doesnt bother me much. Makes me more invested in HER side of the plot, really.

I legit think that people learned the wrong lessons from narrative storytelling cartoons like Ben 10 and Avatar the last airbender had, where we had to eventually build into these grand plots when what people liked about A.T was the simplicity of a boy and his magical dog going on adventures to save princesses from evil wizards and monsters.

The beginning of the end was building upon the war backstory instead of leaving it vague enough. Also just adding tragic backstories to a lot of the cast while having twists that reveal other members of said cast are kind of unlikable monsters *cough PB cough* . Nevermind a love life so disasterous that it makes PETER PARKER's seem like a fairy tale romance. Nevermind when we began to see multiverse plots, holy shit.

But it is what it is and, to its defense, when things were building up to it without too many answers, it was pretty engaging.
Main issue with Adventure Time is that was originally designed to be another take on the formula from Chowder/Flapjack with a comedic duo of a naive child and the mischievous "wise" sibling/caretaker, but instead of a kitchen/dock city it would be a fantasy medieval setting parodying the genre.

Then season 2 struck and "deep lore" started taking over the show and by season 3 the "parody of the genre" got turned into a "deconstruction of the genre" with side plots like the one with Flame Princess or the entire Lemongrab character arc.

Regular Show went on a similar direction with the intense focus on Mordecai's love life and constantly having him acting cringy and a pathetic lovesick puppy for Margarett.

I hated it.

They're what you get when you write a couple as what yaoi fangirls think homos are like. Truly this show is meant to appeal to no one but millennial women who were on tumblr in the 2010s.

Didt pb and the vampire queen have many decades of experience while the gender bends had only a week or so

To be fair, the sequels to those shows also misinterpreted their relatively simple base series as well. OG Ben 10 was just a scooby doo style summer roadtrip show with a whopping recurring cast of 3 characters, and Avatar TLA was a globetrotting adventure centered around completing a literal 4 point checklist (with bullet 1 already checked). The sequels turned into bloated, aimless monstrosities that focused on character drama, retconned lore, and shitty romance subplots. I dont know what it is with modern writers and turning every story into this same melodramatic daytime soap opera genre but its really gay.

What was the ground zero for this kind of shit, seriously?
I have trouble narrowing it down because this annoying-ass fetishism of adding romantic and serialized drama to stories that were clearly not meant for it feels like both a recent and longstanding issue.

Even fuckin Steven Universe was a pretty serviceable show back when it was more or less a monster of the week show with magic and ancient ruins before it became some gay space melodrama, but this shit traces back to Ben 10, I remember I loved it back in the day for all its aliens, but I promise you I couldn't remember any of the shit with the plumbers and other universes and Kevin's fifty new backstories if I TRIED. (Speaking of retcons, I always thought it was lame as hell how Gwen went from some kinda energetic magic user to a boring-ass straight-man archetype to Ben and Kevin where all she could do was make pink barriers, and it seems plenty of fans agreed with me)

Everybody hated when Regular Show dedicated every episode to Mordecai's shitty love life before eventually ending as some serious story in a boring space-tree with Pops training to kill Goku Black or something, nobody really wants to do anything with Korra anymore compared to the last airbender STILL getting new live action shows (none of which are passable, but still) because its fantasy adventure focus is way more interesting than fighting terrorists in new york or something, but they're STILL doing this sort of thing, with Adventure Time getting it quite possibly the worst of the the 2010s era of CN shows.

I was especially surprised when they went the gay route with PB and Marceline while simultaneously making it pretty consistently clear what a bad person Bubblegum is.

DC Comics - DCAU, Teen Titans 2003

DC was the first to really make cartoons with interconnected storylines that would create lore to their series. They also had all the melodrama between the Bruce/Barbara thing, the Terry is Bruce's son reveal, WonderBat ship, HawkLantern ship, the culture issues presented in Static Shock, etc.. Teen Titans also placed a large chunk of emphasis on story and had tons of teen schlock like the Prom episode. I am sure Marvel also had stuff between Spider-Man and the X-Men, but DC is way more prominent and influential towards animation and Tumblr culture.

Beyond them, you could mark things like Invader Zim, Danny Phantom, Avatar TLAB, Total Drama Island, and Ben 10, all of which came before Adventure Time.

If rumor is correct, it was never supposed to happen. AT has a clusterfuck of a writing staff and someone snuck the kiss into the final.

Yeah turning her from hypercompetetive chaos witch to neurotic pink lantern sucked. And dont even get me started on the glow down my GOAT charmcaster got...

Pretty much nailed it. Comic books thrive off of black hole lore building and romance drama. The new x-men shows driving plot has not one, not two, not three, but FOUR relationship subplots.

It's kind of sad. There was a time when cartoons finally got away from the sitcom ghetto and had a diverse array of genres. You had suburban slapstick with Ed, Ed, and Eddy, sci-fi period drama with Samurai Jack, afterschool monster slaying with Danny Phantom/Jake Long/Juniper Lee, spy fiction with KND, Indiana Jones action with Jackie Chan adventures, etc etc. Now its all compressed into the same bland romcom/romdrama format thats popular in comic books. Obligatory out of place prom/dance episode for extra points.

It doesn't affect me personally, since I've aged out of the target audience, but the guys making the slop come from my generation so I do feel a twinge of guilt and can't help but to wonder where it all went wrong.
