[Adult Swim] at "20"

Anime isn't unpopular at all these days but there really was something special about the first half of the 2000s with it, I remember when you could find anime magazines on the shelves of grocery stores which is especially wild to think about today and there used to be a lot more of it aired on US television.

I blame weebs stinking up the reputation of anime as a whole and the fungal bloom of CalArts knockoff crap that American producers are trying to push these days. Also, a lot of the early reputation of anime was established by edgy tits and gorefests and movies like "Akira". These weren't yer Daddy's cartoons! But now that more Western cartoons are pushing adult content - and the rise of adult content in TV series in general, one doesn't have to go to Japan to watch serialized R-rated content.
 
Case Closed? The rename Detective Conan because of copyright issues with Conan the Barbarian even though it was Sir Arthru Conan Doyle being referenced? It wasn't weird, the only weird part was when Conan was turned into a kid and took Conan as a name, otherwise it was an anime murder mystery of the week type of deal.

Seems they cut the anime after that ATHF Litebrite incident in Boston when Demarco was removed as head of [AS]. FMA on weeknights and when Bleach had 2 new episodes premiere at a time were the best.

At the risk of oversharing a bit, I remember being a literal kid in my house just laying down on my parent’s bed while no one else was home and watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time, not really knowing anything about it.

Then I saw this ad:


The old bumper I saw on here literally made me question, “What does this have to do with Cowboy Bebop and why are there old people swimming in a pool?”

Seriously, the old 2000’s ads for [as] will never be forgettable. They make new ones look like corporate advertisement gone wrong.

And yet weeb culture was better when it was not as self conscious, people should have just let the cringe be cringe, if they thought weebdom was something worth getting upset about they literally hadn't seen nothing yet.

Wasn't saying it was weird on it's own, just that it was an odd choice for Adult Swim because despite the murders, it was still a kid's show.

That was my point is I miss when they would pick anime that was a little more "off brand" for Adult Swim, now pretty much everything they air is pretty "on brand" although the upcoming Uzumaki is refreshingly different.

I've always wondered if the TV series had aired on Adult Swim if it would be better remembered than forgotten today.

However the OVA isn't exactly well remember either, but Adult Swim only aired it once or twice, didn't they? I often forget about R.O.D even having an Adult Swim connection.

Their initial aesthetic was really cool and the only time the name actually made sense given the pool theming, was sad is it only lasted a year, I could be wrong but I seem to remember by late 2002 they had already moved on to something different.
 
i still think a lot of the toonami "hype" that gets trending on twitter every few saturdays is astroturfed. I've seen the ratings. I know anime nerds both young and old and nobody is watching that shit. [AS]'s best memories are now preserved in various forms of optical discs and torrents, but the absolute best memories I have of AS aren't that old, but instead their programming being the brighter part of staying at a hotel for work or such, or younger being stuck at some hotel for my father's work, and enjoying stuff a cut above nightly programming, even if it was a rerun of family guy.

It's not weird at all then, a good chunk of the anime they played was for kids or adolescents. Bleach and I think maybe Yu Yu Hakusho were in Weekly Shounen Jump and Inu Yasha was called a feudal fairy tale. Shin-chan was an adult manga turned into a kids show turned into a dub for adults.

Seriously, fuck Boston for overreacting to Litebrites and in turn making AS shit. Family Guy ad nauseum, so glad they're losing it next year.

Yeah, they only played the R.O.D. OVA like once or twice, which was a shame because it was good and the main character was cute.

And people say they played the Cowboy Bebop movie, but I swear they didn't. I would have remembered it.

I forgot about Samurai Champloo until now, so another anime for my list.

I really wish they had given it a bigger push, is there any real reason they couldn't have later licensed the TV series even though G4-TechTV had already aired it?

I honestly believe that R.O.D could have been a bigger franchise if only a little more faith had been shown in it.
 
No, it was just TechTV at the time, because that channel was actually good before Comcast bought it and took a giant steaming diarrhea on it. But who knows? At that point, the Lite Brite incident had occurred though.

I barely remember the TV series, but I liked it enough to buy a sticker of it from Hot Topic back in the day.
 
I remember thinking Stroker and Hoop was the funniest thing I've ever seen when I was a kid, I kinda don't wanna watch it again in fear I'll think it's shit now and hate it.
Pretty sure my favorite adult swim show in general is Moral Orel though, the character writing in the 3rd season was perfect and it somehow still meshed well with the previous 2 season being more comedic in tone. I feel like Moral Orel is like the perfect example of why adult swim used to be such an amazing network since I don't think any other network would allow Morel Orel to take the turn it did, let alone even air a fucking claymation show making fun of religious fundies in the first place. It's an example of the insane creative freedom the showrunners were given paired with adult swim's old philosophy of giving pretty much anything a chance, it was the network full of shows that wouldn't be able to air anywhere else and that's what made it special in my eyes. I don't think it's like that anymore though.

EDIT (to avoid double post): I saw some people comment about Mission Hill. Oh my god, I loved that show back when I first saw it, and I still love it to this day. It's criminally underrated.
 
channel kinda fell off when they axed world peace, but here's hoping smiling friends gives it a reason to be watchable again
as for shows i like on it: home movies, mission hill, ATHF, tim and eric, eric andre, mde world peace, XRA, 12 oz mouse, superjail, s3 of moral orel, maybe sealab 2021
 
I feel like Adult Swim almost hit a new stride with The Eric Andre Show but it's really damning when the only things worth a fuck now are Eric Andre and anime. Rick and Morty is stale. I haven't seen any good Smalls lately either. All of the uniquely creative parts of Adult Swim are now relegated to the one-off smalls and for a Miracle Man, Unedited Footage of a Bear, or Opal there's just a lot of crap.

Well both Venture and Aqua Teen are getting HBO Max movies so...yay?
 
My first exposure to adult swim was when I was little and my family were on a roadtrip while staying at a hotel. Me and my older brother wanted to watch cartoon network while my parents want to watch some program on a different channel. So we made a deal and watch what they wanted until whenever a commercial break happen and go right to cartoon network. Eventually whatever was on cartoon network ended and cartoon network became Adult Swim but we keeped on watching regardless because the first robot chicken star wars special was on and me and my family found it to be hilarious.
Since then I've had found memories of Aqua teen hunger force, Eric Andre, and it's other original programing. It was also my introduction to King of the hill, Home movies, and of course the man, the myth, and the legend.... Sam Hyde!
