R&D at Neuralink is going well, but at the moment the technology certainly isn't anything suitable for use. Considering the size of individual neurons compared to the size of wire electrodes, the resolution is unsuitable (A single implanted electrode will make physical contact with hundreds of neurons simultaneously, not to mention breaking through thousands more to reach its target position.). The biological defenses of the body will also attempt to encapsulate any foreign bodies detected in tissue, making the electrodes only a temporary means of connection until connectivity is severed. Lastly, and most importantly, our understanding of the brains architecture is elementary. We're operating in the dark here, implanting electrodes where we think they'll be effective, but truthfully the probability of success is very low.
The conventional solution to this problem would be allocating more funds towards research institutions and R&D departments, but this is mere optimism. If we are to succeed, we need more thinkers, more people creative enough to challenge the pre-existing scientific technologies and bring forth innovation.
