Romania had laws passed that made it very hard for Jews to get employment in the late 1800's, as a result of antipathy driven by mass immigration of Jews from Russia in previous decades. So they most likely left due to economic concerns. Romania wasn't Jew friendly at the time, but it wasn't experiencing pogroms.
