Water isnt wet: a Kiwi Theory
Something is wet when it is covered in water
water cannot be covered in water, because then it is just more water
ergo water isnt wet
How do you define covered though? Because you can cover water in oil. does the water become 'wet' if you cover it in another fluid which doesn't combine with it?

An absolute unit named George “The Russian Lion” Hackenschmidt said, among other things:
The man becomes independent and self reliant; He will never be a coward, and, when real danger threatens, he is the one who is looked up to by others. The knowledge of one's strength entails a real mastery over oneself; it breeds energy and courage, helps one over the most difficult tasks of life, and procures contentment and true enjoyment of living."
It’s the last half of that quote that I think is most relevant here. The idea of “mastery over oneself” is a quite common ideal in philosophy centered around exercise and why we even do it.
Another example is Bruce Lee, who said something along the lines of if he wanted to punch, we would be able to punch, and if he wanted to kick, he would be able to kick.
The idea is that having the ability, an ability you worked for and practiced, to do more things related to strength and fitness works wonders for the mind, and is something that can help you feel confident in yourself.

A lot of gym rats are fucked in the head, but its not because they work out, rather people work out to cope with anxiety and depression. High intensity aerobics and even oxygen itself are natural highs so they give people temporary escape from their problems. Also, like many other things exercise can be addictive.
On the other hand a bad diet and lack of sunlight and exercise will lead to mode and behavioral issues. Humans evolved as migratory animals, we were not meant to sit on our asses all day in front of a computer. Our emotions are not solely produced by the brain, our microbiomes play a role too.

TL;DR: healthy body =/= healthy mind but healthy body=healthier mind
you still still work out and eat healthy cause even if you're still fucked in the head at least you'll be hot

Orthorexia is a problem in some circles, sadly.

Anything can be taken to extremes.

Being a big muscly dude is not a particularly good goal if it’s just about vanity and looking a certain way. There should be a goal to any exercise that’s not just vanity and looking in the mirror.

Exercise is not particularly natural to humans - the idea of just burning precious calories just to burn calories or have sweet guns goes against a million years of evolution. For most of history the strongest men were strong because their work to survive demanded it. Farmers, blacksmiths, lumber jacks had famed strength due to their work not because of some desire to just be strong. Soldiers kept via marches, building camps, rugged living.

Reinhold Messner wins all my respect for mind/body goals and discipline, both mental and physical. I think training outdoors with a specific goal is the best way. (In Messner’s case to climb all 8,000 ft peaks Alpine style. He continued this goal even in the face of terrible tragedy (his brother dying on an early climb) and ridiculous odds. His physical demands were matched with mental ones just as difficult, as anyone who climbs can attest.

He puts vain body builders to shame.

I think the issue is that our bodies are made for a world we do not live in. We live in a world where food is readily available, where you don't necessarily have to be strong to get by, and now you don't really even have to go outside. The end result of this combination is obvious.

Yup. It's proven
Once I took a Seventh-Adventist diet (basically vegan-vegetarian with lots of tofu to replace beef)

Immediately the female pastor noted that I went from sullen to more cheerful.
Unfortunately me and mom didn't lose more weight the second round of it a year later.

Mens sana in corpore sano.
Even the ancient romans knew this. You cannot be a well-rounded and mentally sound person if you do not dedicate yourself to taking care of yourself. This ranges from eating well, to grooming and cleaning to exercise and sleep.
Anima sana in corpore sano (healthy spirit is healthy body) is behind the acronym for ASICS trainers. And also true
